Fly in the ointment here is that they will need to nearly double the number of part-time employees on the payroll in order to cover all their shifts. And as it is, you can barely find enough people at those wages with some semblance of a work ethic to fill those shifts now.

It will backfire on them, even before Obama and Sebelius do the Public Villification Dance on them.

Yes. Only his plan is going to backfire big time on him and I’m going to tell you why. Only the young idiots that voted for him will have any jobs because no one else ill be able to survive on part time wages so they will have to live at home with their parents until 0 has dumped out all of of their parent’s savings to live on. Then the parents will be forced to kick the idiot liberals to the curb who will then have to live on the streets, quickly realizing what an idiot and fool they were, and understand why socialism is a cancerous government thus converting them into full fledged conservatives. It won’t take long.

They may just make do with fewer employees then. All Kroger stores around here(Metro Detroit Area) have self-checkout lanes and maybe 2 cashiers. Another chain, Meyers has three times as many self-checkout lanes as Kroger already. More chain stores and even independents will probably use self-checkout lanes. These can also be modified for other retail businesses. I’ve seen them at Home Depot or Lowes, can’t recall which.

Not if you replace a lot of those retail and restaurant employees with touch screens and other forms of automation.

Another option--a whole lot of hourly wage earners will be working at least two part-time jobs to make ends meet.

Yep. Part time workers are better candidates for food stamps for life. What better way to destroy a families ability to be self sufficient and make sure both parents have to work than to pass a law that favors part-time vs. full time work?

Nope. Watch for all but 1lane at checkout to be automated. Stocking farmed out to contract companies. Employers will get very creative in finding ways to skirt this law.

Third option, it will accelerate automation. IIRC Kroger is unionized, F&CW?

Replace the people with self-serve scanners.

They will work something out with some other place nearby, wherein each will share their employees with the other. An employee will work 20 hours/week at Kroger, and 20 hours at the other place. That way no employee will work too many hours at any single employer.

With the massive layoffs occurring now and in the next few years, people will be clamoring for those jobs. The illegals and illiterates will have plenty of competition.
