According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 191.3 square miles (495.5 km²). 120.0 square miles (310.7 km²) of it is land and 71.4 square miles (184.8 km²) of it (37.30%) is water. The west town line is the border of Queens County, New York, in New York City. Its northern border is along the main line of the Long Island Rail Road and along Old Country Road in Garden City heading east towards the Wantagh Parkway. Its eastern border runs parallel (and several hundred feet west of) Route 107. To the south is the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Atlantic Beach, Lido, Pt. Lookout, and Jones Beach. For the last time, no one who resides on the beaches or any other LI town would describe themselves as living in Hempstead ... the town of, or otherwise ... No One! And they would consider it an insult if I insisted they did.
NO ONE, except maybe you, says, "I live in Valley Stream, in the town of Hempstead". Instead, they say, "I live in Valley Stream, in Nassau County".
When I send out Christmas cards they will be addressed to East Meadow, Atlantic Beach, Rockville Centre, Wantagh, and Inwood. I guess the cards sent to you will be addressed to 'the town of Hempstead'. So be it.
