Bad kitty. Purr for Barry.
They do work. They work at being criminals.
“I am the master of my fate
I am the captain of my soul.”
from the poem Invictus, by William Ernst Henley.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.
--- "Invictus" by William Ernest Henley (1849-1903)
Sorry, Basil — you beat me to it. LOL.
You paid taxes and lived beyond your means, that isn't 'earning' anything. Because of your decisions you're going on welfare. Congrats.
You forgot that you can’t put the government in jail when it does not follow the Constituitio and that the government can put you in jail when you don’t obey the government. It is kinda like the losers do not get to try the winners. When you decide not to obey the government, get ready to go to jail. And when you go , you will go alone as the few military men who decided to oppose obama learned the hard way.
Where did he say that he lived beyond his means?

Dear Mister Baby Boomer,
Congratulations on your retirement.
Did you not believe the predictions that there would be no social security when you retired?
Did it catch you by surprise, or did you see it coming?
Were you too proud to humble yourself and buy a used car/truck or a smaller house?
Let’s see. Maybe that super cool boat or awesome pair of quads wasn’t the best idea, huh?
I don’t care. Your decisions were YOUR DECISIONS. You OWN THEM.
DON’T COME CRYING ABOUT IT NOW!!!!!
Get a job. Oh yeah, I forgot. THERE AREN’T ANY JOBS because your generation got MY Generation into this mess!!!
I hope a bolt of lightning hits you in the arse!!
“You paid taxes and lived beyond your means,”
Sorry, but “social security” was sold as “insurance”, and morally the “insurance company” has an obligation to pay out benefits to policy holders.
There also should be no taxation on S.S. benefits. You pay for it, you should get it even if you’re Warren Buffet.
The whole concept of “means testing” stinks to high heavens as much as the theft by politicians of the funds from the trust.
It is also immoral to grant benefits to people that didn’t pay the premiums.
There is no “welfare” clause in the Constitution.
“Throughout my life I have made many financial mistakes.”
Financial Mistakes = Spending more money than what you can afford to spend.
He worked “near 50 years” paying into the system and only has social security to retire on = He did not heed the warnings that there would be NO SOCAL SECURITY LEFT to retire on.
What a sad Baby Boomer!!!
Another Ta-Da momment, especially since he/she is asking us to now fix the system he/she helped create.
Where are those “Yuppies” now, anyways??
LOL! We were required to memorize that poem in the 7th grade. I graduated from high school in 1955. Do the math and you will see how long that poem has stuck with me.
I can still recite all the verses. I think if you live your life with the philosophy of that poem, that you will live a better life.
BTW—I can remember all of the poem—but I’m not sure what I had for breakfast this morning...........
I'll give a good hurricane-related example of what I'm talking about. We've had "gas rationing" and long lines at gas stations in place here in New Jersey for about a week and a half. It has gotten better in the last couple of days, but before that there were plenty of stories about people waiting on line for 4+ hours for gas. I've kept two vehicles fully fueled all this time, I've never waited even so much as 5 seconds on a gas line, and that silly "odd/even" gas rationing rule doesn't mean a damn thing to me.
Figure it out and work around the system. This country owes its existence to farmers and small business owners who did exactly that. You'd be surprised how easy it is once you overcome the emotional "the government is all-powerful" barrier that seems like such an insurmountable hurdle.
P.S. The "military men" you refer to have one problem that makes it so easy for a government to trample all over them: they are military men.

“Rather than a republic we are essentially a democracy.”
Actually we are an oligarchy, and for them it is working just fine.
How exactly do you know from the OP how he spent his money?
Do you also consider it welfare for a retired & 80% disabled vet who collects his retirement and disability a form of welfare? He can't work anymore, he is drawing off the tax payer. He is retired at 46. Is that welfare??

I’m a retired vet rated 30% disabled. The VA takes 30% of my gross retirement pay which is given back untaxed.
I don’t see how this is being given “welfare” since all I’m getting is my retirement pay.
