Obama to make statement on economy Friday By Mark Felsenthal | Reuters 48 mins ago
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Newly re-elected President Barack Obama will make a statement on the economy on Friday, the White House said, setting the stage for a showdown with congressional Republicans over contentious tax and spending issues.
The president is likely to discuss looming tax increases and government spending cuts - the so-called fiscal cliff - that would go into effect early next year unless Congress acts to prevent them. He is due to make the statement from the East Room of the White House at 1:05 p.m. (1805 GMT).
Obama, who defeated Republican challenger Mitt Romney on Tuesday in a race in which the two candidates offered different visions for jump-starting the sluggish economy, is not expected to put forward a new or specific plan.
Instead, he is more likely to urge Congress to tackle the fiscal cliff and try to cut the massive U.S. budget deficit. Analysts have said that if left unaddressed, the abrupt fiscal tightening would knock the economy back into recession.
Congressional Republicans have already begun to stake out their position on ways to spare the already modest economic recovery from a fiscal shock. House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner is scheduled to hold a news conference earlier on Friday.
The president's advisers told reporters earlier on Thursday that dealing with the fiscal cliff would be an immediate priority. The administration sees Obama's re-election an endorsement of his position that affluent Americans should see their taxes rise, they said.

he’s calling it in, nothing new, typical Odungo
Yep, Barry is mailing it in and that gives an opening to the GOP.
But it appears the GOP is going to double down on fake bipartisanship and give the dims a gift. With the GOP shell shocked and on the run Amnesty will be the centerpiece of the kenyan’s SOTU speech. BOHICA.
They both are.
Bonehead is a Rino..
Well, Boehner’s strategy might just be that, but he to talk compromise publicly.
Boehner cannot agree to a lame duck deal except to extend whatever into Jan or Feb; he’ll have more leverage when BO needs his debt limit increase.
We’re in unchartered waters. There is much to criticize w the House leadership, but a lot of their decisions were in the context of protecting their ultimate presidential nominee. They don’t have that burden anymore, and the economy is weakening by the day. This hurts BO and the RATS, not the GOP.
I almost want this sucka (US Economy) to go down. That’ll teach them.
If it does, that’ll be the end of the Dems.
We could then rise from the ashes and get it going again.
Am I on to something?
>Obama is the enemy, not Boehner.
If boner does not intelligently and covertly insure that the democrats fail then he will be the enemy.
The economy needs to flame out and bad things need to happen or they will slide back in. It might even fire up some missing brain cells of the morons that did not vote against the democrats.
I’m tired of the fake ‘red lines’ repubs set. I don’t believe they will put their foot down. It’s such a waste of my energy to hope and believe things will change when all they do is do a bunch of talking like they are truly concerned about the state of our country...then allow the dems to use loop holes to do whatever they want.
Its Just bunch of shenanigans or ......ahem...mularkey.
they both are as far as I can tell
I think republicans should give trhe pres what he wants- let him run this country right into the ground- the peopel voted for poverty and attrociously high taxes, let htem have it- give htem what htey want- Let businesses fire 1/2 their staff due to costs- this way the republicans can rightly claim they gave the president every chance to improve the economy and he squandered that chance by ruining this country with high taxes- Give htem the financial chaos they so eagerly desire and voted for-
Run as Speaker of the House in January. No republican speaker should mouth the words "0bamacare is the law of the land". If not Palin, then Bachmann... or West...
Lemme guess...
I won, you lost.
Then off to play golf.
They are both enemies.
You can NOT give Boehner a pass while saying Obama is the problem.
Boehner agrees to things he never should and lacks the will to do what it’s going to take to fix this.
That makes him part of the problem. Not the solution. He needs to step down and allow someone with the guts to shut it down take his place.
Ditto, then they will get a full grasp of the consequences. Unfortunately, we all will suffer because of it. But, it may be a well learned lesson.
Yep... and I have no problems with Republicans bringing real Americans who’ve lost their jobs already to Obamacare up to the microphone to tell their stories of Obama destruction.
the entire political elite is craven and depraved
Well, maybe we can say that Paul Ryan kept his job, too -- but that's for all the wrong reasons.
We truly need term limits.
Boehner should keep his mouth shut. Obama just won the election. Supposedly he’s this great economic genious according to the left. Let Obama make the first move. I say let him present his economic plan to the American people. No need to get out in front of the train wreck Obama is going to cause.
I predict another stock market crash tomorrow.
That is ONLY because they have not voted for the speaker of the house yet.
Ya, he kept his seat. Can he keep the speakership? I hope not.
