Obama to make statement on economy Friday By Mark Felsenthal | Reuters 48 mins ago
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Newly re-elected President Barack Obama will make a statement on the economy on Friday, the White House said, setting the stage for a showdown with congressional Republicans over contentious tax and spending issues.
The president is likely to discuss looming tax increases and government spending cuts - the so-called fiscal cliff - that would go into effect early next year unless Congress acts to prevent them. He is due to make the statement from the East Room of the White House at 1:05 p.m. (1805 GMT).
Obama, who defeated Republican challenger Mitt Romney on Tuesday in a race in which the two candidates offered different visions for jump-starting the sluggish economy, is not expected to put forward a new or specific plan.
Instead, he is more likely to urge Congress to tackle the fiscal cliff and try to cut the massive U.S. budget deficit. Analysts have said that if left unaddressed, the abrupt fiscal tightening would knock the economy back into recession.
Congressional Republicans have already begun to stake out their position on ways to spare the already modest economic recovery from a fiscal shock. House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner is scheduled to hold a news conference earlier on Friday.
The president's advisers told reporters earlier on Thursday that dealing with the fiscal cliff would be an immediate priority. The administration sees Obama's re-election an endorsement of his position that affluent Americans should see their taxes rise, they said.

"Obama... is not expected to put forward a new or specific plan. Instead, he is more likely to urge Congress to tackle the fiscal cliff..."
Second verse, same as the first.
It’s always easier to shoot our own.
Maybe the Martians will invade.
i do. I want to be able to tell my grandchildren how the first American Republic died. As a warning to then of the dangers of the socialist welfare state.
But, but...he had that pamphlet thingy at the debate that had his "new and improved" plan already thought out didn't he? Is he gonna wait until he is officially sworn in for the new term before telling the public all about it?
There's a crass colloquial acronym that's appropriate here: SSDD.
Showdowns with Republicans are OVER
Because Bone-less Bohner folded like a 99cent store suit!
He’s going to Burma on a vacation the minute he’s done talking. Working isn’t one of his strong points.
Where is your plan, Bobo? On the golf course? The bball court? Did Mooch eat it? OWN IT.
Question.
When will we see the unemployment rate skyrocket?
We all know it will.
Lagging indicator.
4Q is what you should watch; if it's as bad as predicted, double-dip is here.
Yeah. That’s kinda what I thought.
Anything released this week wouldn’t indicate anything. That gives the enemedia time to build the blame on republicans.
Someone needs to go front and center on this and explain that this tax increase would fuel the government leviathan for 18 minutes.
Show me where I said he has a mandate? He has power. We do not. We have a quivering USSC that just rubber stamped the government takeover of the health care industry. We have a minority of patriotic Americans in the house with the majority ready to vote a particular way after the threats. He has a giant bureaucracy that he is already using to crush his enemies (e.g. the USDOT harassing the coal industry truckers) He has the senate about to hit the nuke button. He has the entire media on his side, bar none. He has the "flexibility" to do whatever he wants and he will do it. For example, he will make electricity rates skyrocket as he said he would. He won't just target coal plants but natural gas as he said he would. He will hand China the rest of our energy-intensive industry. He will executive order amnesty. He will pack the court to get a rubber stamp to trash the rest of the constitution.
Mandate? Gimme a break, he has everything he needs.
I am slipping toward the let it all happen camp. Go Galt. Stop pulling the increasingly overloaded wagon and retreat to Galt's Gulch. Or even further, "Stop the motor of the world." Maybe something good will arise from the wreckage or not, but we will no longer enrich our Marxist masters.
You’re correct Truth29 that Romney didn’t strike enough fear in the hearts of marginal voters about the dire economic situation that Obama’s policies have created for America. Romney got the 90% of Republican leaning voters who paid enough attention to the issues and believed that Romney - with all his faults - would still do a better job than Obama. He didn’t get the 10% of marginal voters who are motivated only through fear and anger. Those people voted in 2010 and stayed home in 2012. Romney was vicious against his Republican opponents in the primaries and a wimp in not attacking Obama in the campaign.
Lol. One can always hope.
