The Case of the Missing White Voters (7 Millions White Voters Stayed Home)
RCP ^ | 11/8/12 | Sean Trende

One of the more intriguing narratives for election 2012 was proposed by political scientist Brendan Nyhan fairly early on: that it was "Bizarro 2004." The parallels to that year certainly were eerie: An incumbent adored by his base but with middling approval ratings nationally faces off against an uncharismatic, wishy-washy official from Massachusetts. The race is tight during the summer until the president breaks open a significant lead after his convention. Then, after a tepid first debate for the incumbent, the contest tightens, bringing the opposition tantalizingly close to a win, but not quite close enough.

The Election Day returns actually continued the similarities. George W. Bush won by 2.4 percent of the popular vote, which is probably about what Obama’s victory margin will be once all the ballots are counted. Republicans in 2004 won some surprising Senate seats, and picked up a handful of House seats as well. The GOP was cheered, claiming a broad mandate as a result of voters’ decision to ratify clear, unified Republican control of Congress and the presidency for the first time since 1928. As Bush famously put it, “I earned capital in the campaign, political capital, and now I intend to spend it.”

Yesterday afternoon I started a comparison of McCain in 2008 and Romney this year, then realized quickly that many states still had 5%-10%, or more of their votes still not counted. Stopped working on it and still haven’t resumed. Now it’s being discussed widely so some in the media should produce some decent analysis soon.

The puzzle for me is still why, apparently, the level of Republican enthusiasm was so overestimated by many pundits, and even all those early voting comparisons that were supposed to favor Republicans. Some really erroneous assumptions were latched onto by Dick Morris and others. I doubt Morris will recover from this one.

I am afraid that if my brother had done that I might have punched my brother for abusing my father that way. What a punk.

Well Boogerman, you can pat the SOBs on the back for giving the commie four more years to destroy MY Country but I would rather kick their asses and if you and they don’t like it, so what? If they didn’t care now, what makes you think they’d be loyal at any time?

Republicans need to poll, survey, focus group folks who did not vote. They need to know, not guess, why.

Republicans first need to poll to confirm that people did not vote.

How do we know that they did, in fact, vote, but that their votes were lost or otherwise not counted?

“If they didn’t care now, what makes you think they’d be loyal at any time?”

See, there’s your problem, assuming that voters are going to all sign on for ideology and be “loyal”, like the handful of political junkies that post to sites like this. The vast majority of the electorate doesn’t operate like that. They have their opinions and preferred ideology, but they don’t worry about it as much as we do, they just go about their daily lives. So you can blame the tiny minority of a tiny minority that refused to vote for Romney for ideological reasons, or you can look at reality and discover that what really happened was that Mitt couldn’t motivate the average voters in numbers that were needed to win.

If you want your party to win elections, you need to figure out how to get those people excited about voting for your guy, not put the blame on irrelevant scapegoats and then rail against them. That accomplishes nothing, except to make you look bitter and angry.

Be prepared to hear all about lots of “voters staying home”...the Bipartisan Oligarchy would rather we all stew in that mess..than having us all bothered, and deciding to investigate, about all the voters voting who never voted...

Listening to descriptions of how “Democrats got out their ground game” with “superior ability to bring those to the polls who normally would never go” by the commentators on Fox election night..made me realize..what they actually have done is track names that HAVE NOT VOTED IN MANY, MANY elections cycles....and vote them.

http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Government/2012/10/23/No-Car-Finds-2-214-Registered-Voters-110-Years-of-Age-Older

A well-funded project, county-by-county..to examine the names signed in at at the polls..and going out to find those individuals..you’ll find they were never physically at he polls..or they themselves never filled out the absentee ballot....or their names in the death registers.

Many who live near the cities were afraid that blacks would riot if their messiah lost.

Nope, it’s on the GOPe who foisted a RINO onto us, thinking we wouldn’t leave the plantation.

Well, I’ve left the plantation, and don’t answer to you no more.

How soon you forget the Romney Truth File from the founder of this site.

Romney was a lying sack of garbage who lied about the many good men who ran for the Republican nomination.

He no more derved to be president than Obama.

“Tell me which candidate you believe deserved to be POTUS?”

Any of the given candidates in the Republican primary that Romney lied about, slandered, and buried with lies and ROPe help.

Romney is filth who lied his way to the nomination.

Now that you’ve had you pity party, I suggest you do what you can do to make sure that an actual principaled conservative gets the nomination in 2016 so 7 million Republicans don’t stay home like we did this time.

Yeah, 2010 was the perfect storm created by the the Tea Party in behalf of the GOPe. 2010 was an off year election where turnout is generally low creating a scenario where a relatively small number of motivated people can flip a congressional race. 2010 was an outlier that blinded many to the true political demographics of the nation. This caused many polls to be wrong and created a false hope that Romney could and would win. The final vote tally for 2012 will be closer to 2008 when all the results are in, so there will probably not be a huge difference in turnout between the two elections. I think the final chapter about this election will not be so much that republicans stayed home, but rather there is a significant change in the nation's demographics that is occurring and that Team Obama earned the victory by being better able to target sympathetic voters and physically getting them to vote. Unfortunately the GOP is old, white, and male, traits that one can longer build a winning election coalition around.
