Puerto Rico's Gov. Luis Fortuño Loses Re-Election Bid

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - Puerto Ricans have endorsed U.S. statehood for the Caribbean island but also ousted the pro-statehood governor in a close election.

Gov. Luis Fortuno conceded defeat Wednesday to his main challenger after concluding there were not enough outstanding ballots to close the gap with his main challenger, Alejandro Garcia Padilla. The margin in Tuesday's vote was less than 1 percent.

"Now it's time for us to come together as one people. The campaign is over," Fortuno said in a news conference.

Another in a long line of decisions made on election night that make no sense...I thought this guy had been a good and effective governor...and they toss him out of office?

A Governor that cut spending, cut waste, balanced budgets and brought jobs and prosperity to his citizens.

And his thanks? They vote him out of office...

Do we get any say as to whether or not we'll have them?

Because I don't think we need another state, especially one that doesn't share our language.

Fortuno is a great guy. Sad to see him go, and without him, I see no temptation to add Puerto Rico to the list of states the Dems will likely win.

He's done a number of good things on local fiscal issues, but from what I've heard the guy is pretty much a RINO and Obama suckup when it comes to national politics.

They have this creepy political system in Puetro Rico where "Republicans" and "Democrats" will help each other win over a candidate of their own party, if that person is aligned with them on statehood. In other words, a pro-statehood conservative Republican will help a pro-statehood liberal Democrat win over an anti-statehood conservative Republican, and a pro-status quo Democrat will help a pro-status quo Republican win over a pro-statehood Democrat. The local parties are organized by whether you support statehood, status quo, or independence, and you can find all three factions have membership in the national Democrat Party, for example.

Fortuño's loss is probably ultimately bad for Puerto Rico's economy, but I'm glad this guy won't be influencing national politics anymore. I don't trust Fortuño one bit.

We don’t need another democrat party dependency to add it’s weight in the electoral college. No — to PR statehood.

From what I’ve heard from Puerto Rico, the governor’s failure to grapple with the crime issue helped sink him. Crime and murder on the island are far, far out of control. People are afraid of getting killed by stray bullets simply driving down the streets.

Regardless of whatever else a governor does, if he can’t address a crime crisis, he’s going to be in trouble.

And then there's the Mayor of San Juan, PR's Family Christmas Card.

Good times. Good times.

Republican you think? He was a featured speaker at the convention

Some thought he might be an outside the box VP choice for Romney.

And so I repeat again - so much for ‘pubs reaching out to minorities - an attractive, accomplished, articulate Latino, or is it Hispanic, defeated for reelection by a ‘rat electorate, like Mia Love and Allen West, attractive, accomplished, articulate Blacks defeated for election by white male Democrats - and yet Republicans continue to be demonized as being “non-inclusive” and insular......
