Boehner: New taxes OK under right conditions (Headline is a Lie)
MarketWatch ^ | 11/7/12 | Robert Schroeder

Posted on 11/07/2012 1:04:44 PM PST by illiac

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- New revenues "under the right conditions" are acceptable to Republicans as part of a deal to reduce the deficit, House Speaker John Boehner said Wednesday. But Boehner, speaking a day after his party retained its House majority in elections, said revenue should come through growth and reform, not higher tax rates. Bush-era tax cuts are set to expire and automatic spending cuts will kick in next year if Congress doesn't act in the lame-duck session

“Give them everything they want. 90 percent tax rates? Sure. Go ahead. Let’s get it over with. Rome died a slow death. I’d just as soon the poison work more quickly, thanks.”

Absolutely agree. Let Obama propose the most horrendous tax increase believing that the PUBs will oppose and negotiate it down, then surprise, surprise, overwhelmingly approve same. This nation is going to collapse, just let it happen quickly so our children can live to see a resurrection during their lifetime rather than years and years of misery.

have nothing to lose

Actually other than insanely wealthy with another dual citizenship passport in hand, there probably isn't much of a better place to be right now than with nothing to lose.

Obama is the first president in over 70 years to be re-elected with fewer votes (9-10 million). That right their shows Obama does not an overwhelming mandate this time. Boehner does also not have to worry about hurting a presdential canidate.

This is where the GOP made a big mistake.

We needed to allow higher taxes on the millionaires in exchange for requiring that all levels of taxpayers at least pay something to demonstrate to the lower income earner the cost of government.

I really don’t understand why we had to die on that hill. The average guy doesn’t understand S corps and all that garbage. He just knows that the guy who makes $250k a year shouldn’t pay a lower marginal rate than him.

And we didn’t have to give on the $250k line. We could have simply said everyone over one million in earnings pays a higher marginal rate with less deductions. That would have hit all sorts of celebrities and athletes who loved Obama.

We needed a meaningful tax reform platform. Trying to explain why no tax increase for millionaires was too hard to explain. The optics were terrible.

Interesting that Boehner and McConnell were both totally silent throughout this campaign, even as obama was trashing the "do nothing" congress that was really describing his own stonewalling, and the democrat senate.

Why did Boehner say ANYTHING the next day? It doesn’t matter what he proposes.... his timing is terrible! Let the dems come to the GOP instead of the GOP so anxious to make any kind of deal with the dems.
We are not in any mood for olive branches the day after or the week after. Of any kind.

“I believe in figuring out how much money the government needs to operate, dividing by the number of people over age 18, and sending everyone their bill for that amount.”

I wouldn’t be opposed to that... simple and elegant.

I also believe that any country we go and fight for and win we get to keep.

Was for a flat tax, applied equally to all income levels, and was for it thirty years ago. Know that is hard to believe though it is true. Those with whom I spoke were afraid. Afraid of losing deductions. Then the next excuse was what keeps the rate constant? Would not Congress have the power to raise the rate. The truth is yes Congress would have that right. Sorry FRiend if you think I was attacking you personally. I wish it were simple but it is not.

At this point am with the crowd that says let it fail. Give obama everything, and I do mean everything he wants. Let him have the blame. After all obama told us we did not build it, so heck let him go ahead and break it. If Boehner compromises it will be the end of his career and many if not all Republicans. Let obama hold it. Give the democRATS what they voted for. Walk away and let obama go at it. The entire collapse is coming no matter what deal is made. Let obama and the democRATS own it.

I don’t know if a flat tax is the answer to raising revenue, but I rather have Boehner talk of raising revenues than just raising taxes, to cover the shortfalls.

I think we have to face it... because Obama got re-selected we are going to have to swallow a massive increase - ObamaCare and all of the entitlements aren’t going to disappear. And regulations are going to make job and company growth slow.

We are evolving into Canada - it sucks, but the sheeple have spoken.

I take no offense to your comments - thank you.

Thank You too. We tried FRiend. Time to let the suckers see what they voted for if Boehner does NOT set himself up to take the blame, and with the media in obama’s and the democRATS’ corner will not take much for Boehner to be the one blamed. Walk away and give them what they want. Everything and I do mean everything. Make it clear to the American people, obama and the democRATS won. May take only two or three months before the fall starts and maybe one year to reach bottom. This kicking of the can down the road is growing tiresome. It’s going to collapse, deal or no deal. Better soon than later from my perspective.

This is partly why I posted this...

The Title is misleading and I wonder if the MSM is already setting us up....

Well then please make your title reflect the "catch" of the lie.

Something like: "MSM caught in lie: Twists Boehner's vow to not raise tax rates." And comment on it specifically.

(I'm sure someone else can come up with a better title than my suggestion!)

As a general comment on the story: I'm not placing any bets that Boehner will hold his ground, but at least he's out the gate in the right direction, and should be encouraged, not damned. A certain Ben Franklin quote comes to mind...

There is nothing I’d like more than to see the dems own it and fail.... but sadly that won’t happen. (IMO)

Who will mark it as a Democrat failure, the press, the MSM ? Who will get the blame, the congress ? What do you think ? We’ve been down this road already. Boehner gets it from both sides - he can’t win - I don’t know why he wants the job.

Obama FAILED the first four years of his presidency and +60 million people are giving him a second chance to do it again - that is insane!!!! That means over 60M people don’t care .... so hell yeah I’d love to sit back and watch just like all these freeloaders.

I ain’t going to revolt - because I don’t have to. If we are right the whole mess will implode without our help.

Boehner will attempt to do the job he’s suppose to do, I doubt he’ll lose his job as a congressman. West Chester Ohio is very republican, and very pro-Boehner.

One important fact or factoid. The collapse is coming. Boehner can own it with all of the other Republicans or it can he handed off to obama, the democRATS, and their voters. I was yelling about the debt when President Ronald Reagan was President. I though we had a deal with the democRATS on that day a hand shake took place. For every new two dollars, in revenue, the debt would be paid off with ONE of the dollars. Yes, the democRATS spent the TWO dollars and increased the debt by borrowing. Can imagine President Reagan was furious in his later years, I am and was. Bottom line ... I learned, one cannot make a deal with democRATS. The democRATS will not uphold their end of a deal, bargain, or hand shake. Screw 'em! I have learned. Have the rest of the Republicans? We will soon know.

This is where the GOP made a big mistake.

We needed to allow higher taxes on the millionaires in exchange for requiring that all levels of taxpayers at least pay something to demonstrate to the lower income earner the cost of government.

I partially disagree. For one thing, you are basically saying that everyone pays more. Goodbye, economy, hello, even bigger gov't. (Ok, we're headed that way anyway, but your idea makes it worse.)

Also, though I agree about making lower income learners aware of the cost of Government, the avg. Joe or Josie is not really that "aware" of what's withheld from their paycheck. They MAY know the number at the end of the year, but few average people (outside of FReepers and like minded people, who are NOT average), even if they are tight on $$, look at their paycheck stub for 10 minutes each payday, whilst turning the air blue about the amount withheld.

IMO, a National Sales Tax (not a VAT), with a lower rate for necessities like food, should replace the Income Tax. If people got whacked with a steep rate, on top of existing state & local rates, every time they make a purchase, that'd be quite effective "education", I believe.

I really don’t understand why we had to die on that hill. The average guy doesn’t understand S corps and all that garbage. He just knows that the guy who makes $250k a year shouldn’t pay a lower marginal rate than him.

What if that guy risked his money and as a result he created 200 jobs? (Risk / reward).

And we didn’t have to give on the $250k line. We could have simply said everyone over one million in earnings pays a higher marginal rate with less deductions. That would have hit all sorts of celebrities and athletes who loved Obama.

That still discourages many job providers and grows the Gov't, unless you have a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution. It also does not actually increase revenue in many scenarios, and can decrease it in some.

Now, if you are suggesting some sort of highly progressive "entertainers' tax", I would not object, and I think few voters would. :-)

We needed a meaningful tax reform platform. Trying to explain why no tax increase for millionaires was too hard to explain. The optics were terrible.

The thing is, as I was just discussing with my wife earlier today, Romney actually DID explain it wonderfully, in the 1st debate, adding that tax increases, especially in a soft economy, "never get you there". It just frustrates me all to heck that he did not stay with that in the next 2 debates, because Obama had no reply, and in fact argued basically the same, a couple years ago.

Well, sometimes the inhabitants are not too happy about that & fighting them is eventually just too much trouble. (Philippines.)

Grenada and Panama? Ok, cool.

Iraq. Well maybe if we truly totally run it. (Oil. Drilling here is less trouble, though.)

Afghanistan? Yuck!!!
