I think Chuck Todd has this right, and not just because of last nights poor showing for Republicans among Hispanics. In looking at the daunting issues facing the lame-duck 112th Congress and the incoming 113th, comprehensive immigration reform might be a comparative slam-dunk:
After Tuesday nights re-election victory for President Barack Obama, MSNBCs Chuck Todd predicted that one of the presidents agenda items one promise he never managed to fulfill in his first term would breeze into law. Immigration reform, he said, will get 80 to 90 votes in the Senate. Since the election night results showed Republicans unable to attract Latino voters, he said, Republicans will run, not walk, in trying to support that now.
The question isnt whether Republicans will rush to back some version of comprehensive immigration reform. There have always been enough Republican votes in the Senate to pass a reform plan. A Republican President came close to passing a version of it in 2007 but got demagogued by Democrats and halted by conservatives in the Senate who thought it gave too much away. Had Obama chosen to propose immigration reform in 2009, ahead of ObamaCare and particularly if he had allowed Republicans more of a bipartisan role in shaping a stimulus package both sides wanted in one form or another, Obama could easily have passed immigration on his terms three years ago.
Now, immigration reform looks like low-hanging fruit compared to the crises that face our political class now. The lame-duck Congress has to undo sequestration and deal with Taxmageddon. The next Congress has to figure out how to deal with massive deficits and unfunded entitlement liabilities that will crush the American economy within a decade without serious reform. On those issues, there is substantial philosophical and ideological hostility. In comparison, there are only a few issues keeping immigration reform from being passed, nearly none of which are ideological, and most of which are either technical or matters of prioritization.
Id expect this to get taken up in early 2013 and pass by the summer, with substantial compromise on both sides. It may be the only real bipartisanship we see next year.
They think they can win by becoming liberals.
As is conservationism it would seem. True libertianinism is the believe in indiviual liberty.
Conservtivism is not an ideology but rather a desire to either hold on to what exist or return to what was.
Holding on to what exist is desirable to almost nobody, and returning to what was is perhaps no longer possible given the destruction of our demographic, moral, and economic base brought about over the last 100 years.
We can try to recreate the values and printable that led to what was, but that is mostly called liberalism with religious traditionalism.
In all of theses efforts our main problem is the matter of race, specifically the democrat’s lock on ethic minority as a kind of voter slave. We know from talking to these people that almost all of them are as conservative or more so than we are. But we simply can’t get their vote why?
Why are they voting for something or someone that is so at odds with their traditions and values?
There is something there and we have to Find & distory it fast! Or there will be nothing more than the democratic party period.
bump
What are called “libertarians” today are the enemy of this country
To bring in more aliens to do the jobs citizens don’t want? Really?
To bring in more aliens to do the jobs citizens don’t want? Really?
“Who couldnt see this coming? The Stupid Party will pander to our new masters, instead of getting rid of them. Those of us who want illegal immigration stopped have no one representing us. Instead of learning from their mistakes, the Republican Party is committing suicide.
“
You know its interesting how in reality most of the Democratic party in particularly their black minority want that and many other conservative causes and yet they wont vote for it.
We have a very serous problem of race in America, only its not the problem the leftist have been defining for 100+ years its a problem of entire races voting in lock step against their own values & printable. In short they are themselves racist against themselves.
We have anther more fundmetal problem too, our famly has fallen apart with real marrage.
infact I would even go so far as to assert that REAL marrage does NOT EXIST anymore for 90% of the population.
A real marriage does not end in divorce, a real marriage is not defines so much by love as commitment to family. Hollywood has taken this acent idea and thrown it out with the baby.(who are also being produced at sub-replacement levels)
The short and simple status report is America is mostly dead already. What survives of our legacy are going to be the small pockets that hold to virtues. Perhaps groups like the Amish and the devout populations of the south.
There is likely to be little left of the rest of us in a 100 years time after we who are now living have all died off.
Major mistake, my office mate is a first generation American from Mexico and she is very English official language and emigration by the books. As a plus she’s as good looking as Salma Hayek.
See my tagline.
The Issue needs to be Addressed soon. Do you want LATINOs to be another DEMOCRATIC branch like the blacks are? We need to get the hispanic leaders and talk to them.
Hispanics are the new majority and if we don't do something, we might close down the GOP, because they'll have Texas, Florida and Georgia soon!!
leave it to the GOP to look for ways to empower those that vote them out of office while they throw their supporters under the bus
We could literally spearhead immigration reform and it wouldnt help much . . .
Perhaps. It all depends on what “reform” encompasses. The Republicans can advocate certain minor changes in the immigration law that will, IMO, make them more attractive to immigrant communities but will not open any ‘floodgates.’
Two specific changes come immediately to mind. First, remove the “3/10” bar, which provides that an alien who is outside the US and seeks to re-enter is barred from doing if he had previously been “unlawfully present” in the US for more than 6 months but less than a year (barred for 3 years), or for more than one year (barred for 10 years).
Second, bring back “Suspension” (of Deportation/Removal) whereby an alien in removal/deportation proceedings can be granted Lawful Permanent Residence if s/he’s been in the country for at least 7 years, has “Good Moral Character” (no criminal record), and can show (to the Immigration Judge) that leaving the US would cause him (or a spouse, child, or parent who is a US citizen or has a green card) “extreme hardship.” There were no numerical limits to the number of grantees.
At present (8 USC § 1229b, if anyone is interested), “Cancellation of Removal” requires 10 years in the country, Good Moral Character, and showing (again, to an Immigration Judge) that leaving the US would cause “exceptional and extremely unusual hardship” to his spouse, parent, or child who is a USC, etc. Only 4,000 cases can be granted in any fiscal year.
U don’t understand immigration at all. U are very raciest and don’t understand how many Americans are married and have children with immigrants. GOD BLESS YOU.
If I see another troll piece by that worthless traitor RINO Ed Morrissey, I’m going to skin Rowe’s goat.
I think that most Americans would ask for immigration reduction if they knew that there was over one million immigrants entering the country every year. Yet we are not allowed to speak of decreasing immigration, we are only allowed to speak of increasing immigration.
Conservatives ought to have polls asking people how they feel about what the yearly immigration numbers should be. Of course, the Democrats control the immigration bureacracy so they have no desire to reduce the numbers. We have to find ways to sharply reduce immigration or our children will be a minority in their own country.
I ain’t at all apposed to immigration id just like it to happen at a slower more assimilable rate.
In my judgement if your married to an American in a REAL marriage that is more than close enough. The trouble is there are so few REAL marriages left. Most marriages today are not real marriages the party’s are not truly committing to each other for life.
