But whether Barack Obama is elected to a second term or Mitt Romney is elected the 45th president, the contours of their support during this fiercely fought campaign show that we live in two Americas.
The culturally cohesive America of the 1950s that some of us remember, usually glossing over racial segregation and the civil-rights movement, is no longer with us and hasnt been for some time.
Niche media has replaced universal media.
One America listens to Rush Limbaugh, the other to NPR. Each America has its favorite cable news channel. As for entertainment, Americans have 100-plus cable channels to choose from, and the Internet provides many more options
We tend to choose the America that is culturally congenial. Most people in the San Francisco Bay area wouldnt consider living in the DallasFort Worth metroplex, even for much better money. Most metroplexers would never relocate to the Bay Area.
There are plenty of smart and creative and successful people in both Americas. But they dont like to mix with each other these days.
One America tends to be traditionally religious, personally charitable, appreciative of entrepreneurs, and suspicious of government. The other tends to be secular or only mildly religious, less charitable, skeptical of business, and supportive of government as an instrument to advance liberal causes.
The more conservative America tends to be relatively cohesive. Evangelical Protestants and white Catholics make common cause ... Southern or northern accents dont much matter.
Thats typical of the Republican party, which has always had core support from people who are seen as typical Americans but are not by themselves a majority in our always diverse country.
The more liberal America tends to be diverse. Like Obamas 2008 coalition, it includes many at the top and at the bottom of the economic ladder.

Isnt it ODD that some many of these pundits whom had cred on predicting, were off? Either they were: shills of disinformation, someone who should have never been listened to anyway, OR fraud was so enormous with the electronic voting counted by another Country, that they were right, but it was stolen with the flip of a switch.
I’m wondering about that too. How could they all be so catasrophically wrong? Romney crowds were gigantic. obama was lucky to fill half a venue. Those weren’t illusions. They were real. I’m thinking more and more that what we saw last night was voter fraud on a gigantic scale.
“Might not be long before we can easily imagine Obama ordering our military to fire on our own people.”
History of the world convincingly demonstrates that armies have no problem assaulting “their own people.”
Got that right. And the US isn’t an exception.
“The Day the U.S. Army Attacked WWI Veterans & their Kids”
“When later discussing the military operation against U.S. World War One Vets at the U.S. capitol, Major Dwight D. Eisenhower, later President of the United States, it was “wrong for the Army’s highest-ranking officer to lead an action against fellow American war veterans”.
“Eisenhower was one of MacArthur’s junior aides at the time, and while he said he strongly advised the future World War Two military leader against the attack, it is also true that he OFFICIALLY ENDORSED MacArthur’s conduct,,,”

Patton was happy to attack the WWI vets also, so he could get “combat experience.”
That’s a simple problem to solve. More taxpayer money and public service jobs. That’s the unifying theme of the Democratic coalition. Keep the funds flowing to the interest groups and everything else takes care of itself.
i agree. now that i’m seeing Judges (republican) in new york were voted down, i’m even more inclined to believe that.
at least where i live, once a judge is appointed, unless there is a case ruling so vile, they have no trouble winning their election every 4 years.
axelrod had a reason for what he said about winning. we know why.
these people have no conscience and are evil.
No shots were fired during that disgraceful operation. If US Army soldiers were ordered to fire against veterans, the whole affair would have turned into a muntinous meltdown.
Yes. A divorce based on irreconcilable differences.
We can’t really even talk because words simply do not mean the same things or carry anywhere near the same connotations to liberals as they do to conservatives.
VERY good point. When sides that share the same language (English) can’t understand what each other are saying because they have totally different definitions to words in that language, it’s impossible to even communicate.
No shots were fired during that disgraceful operation.
They didn’t need to fire shots. They torched what little the WWI vets had left.
