Hurricane Sandy's darker side: Looting and other crime
CSM via Yahoo News ^ | 11/3/12 | By Amy Lieberman

Mr. Cooper and a few friends stood talking on his house's porch. It was about 7:45 p.m. and they were the only people around. The ocean breeze was getting colder and stronger. He held his flashlight and looked out onto the street, which was still covered with sand. “There's no lights, there's no cameras, there's no alarms, there's no nothing. It's kind of scary, you know?” he said. His neighbor, Talentin Gutierez showed a reporter a borrowed generator, worth about $2,000. His was robbed the other day. Tonight, he will sleep in his car – wrecked from water damage – to guard the generator.

The local HF doesn't have the big panels.

Neither does Tractor Supply.

There may be some local vendors, but they seem to tend to be "System Installers".

I'm all about DIY.

A cell phone is apparently only good for calling in the Trash Collectors to stop by and take out the Trash.

A cell phone by your bedside was way better than a gun because a cop would only be minutes away

I happen to be fond of my dog.

If the good citizens of NYC & boroughs found their courage....
.....and elected leaders who wouldn't interfere with their 2nd Amendment rights...

A few of these stories would end with perps down...
After the word got out on the street...
....most of these looting stories would not be written.

The armed & trained citizenry is the first line of defense for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness...
(aka... personal safety including family, home & property...)

"When seconds count, the police are only minutes away."
(.... or longer during post-disaster emergency conditions -- just sayin')

I keep getting told by a couple of friends everyone is getting help.

This is way better than Katrina.

No one is standing on their roofs waiting for help or dying.

An under-reported cause for some of the human deaths and injuries, from people refusing to evacuate, is what happened last year when people did evacuate from Hurricane Irene. While also a cat 1 hurricane, Irene did nowhere near the damage of Sandy in its landfall in Brooklyn in 2011.

Yet what the hurricane did not do, humans did do in terms of burglaries and looting. So with H.Sandy being matched in theoretical intensity, how many people decided to risk the warnings in order to protect against a repeat of last year’s lawlessness?

At what point should the consideration be made that looters are vultures and that there should be an “open season” on them as such. Not nice, not happy but this demonstrates the real consequence of this behavior. New York fatalities are 48 and New Jersey has 24, how many stayed behind to protect that which they, maybe, could not replace in these difficult times?

Funny I’ hear things more like this:

We have been cut off, out of the loop for days not knowing anything but what the local media on the radio had reported. Even getting power back we still have no TV. I just got Internet.

The damage in my town and the towns surrounding me is moderate to severe. Flooding is horrible and no one had power. But we survived and lucky to have more than most elsewhere.

Water is unusable and sewage treatment plants are down left and right. THE WATER SMELLS OF CHLORINE - SUPER STRONG!

Gas/food/supplies:
it is near impossible to get. On a normal day I travel 70 miles a day into Nassau County and points in between. I quickly ran out of fuel and still find it impossible to get gas. I refuse to play into this panic and wait online 3-4-5-6++ hours just to get $40 of $4.89 gas.

Everyone wants a generator. All over the radio talk about them here or there. No gas but run out and buy that generator.

Food stores are hit or miss. I really feel this is the next big crisis. No deliveries are getting in. Twice now I have gone out to restock the fridge with new food and found foul milk being sold at King Kullen and Stop & Shop!

Controlled Chaos:
The politicians are making things worse. Media is hand in hand creating panic. All day long on local stations all they have is folks calling in reporting who has and who has no gas. I’m sure you hear the stories. People lines up hours waiting at a closed station for some delivery that may or may not arrive.

For example, Governor Cuomo in all his infinite wisdom announces 10 gallons of free fuel in mobile stations parked in western regions of the affected area. Lines form and quickly they tell everyone its for EMS vehicles only. Mayor Bloomberg holds a news conference an hour later telling people to go get the free gas if they need it.

Employment:
Most everyone I know couldn’t get to work on Friday. No gas. My job laid everyone off on Friday afternoon for all of next week. Calling it a work furlow just so you can’t claim unemployment! So now people need to worry how the hell they are supposed to feed their family losing close to 2 weeks pay.

Look it’s bad. Worst I’ve ever seen. Worse than Gloria back in the 80’s and much much worse than the 70’s gas crisis. Back then it wasn’t chaos. IT IS COMPLETE CHAOS.

I have seen fights in the streets. Accidents and cars broken down on the side of the road no gas. Flooding came far inland, trees and power lines down all over. LIPA can not tell us when the power will be restored fully and the whole situation is about to boil over into a full scale breakdown of society.

I can see how they control the chaos. Slowly ratcheting it up and now whipping it up into a full scale frenzy.

I know this is normal for a crisis such as this but hold on folks. I see it getting much worse yet! This was more than a “Hybrid Storm”. It was the start of it all! I am sure of it.

Looting in Far Rockaway wouldn’t surprise me one bit. But I haven’t seen any stories about looting in Belle Harbor. Could you please direct me to one/some?

I did find this about Rockaway Beach - bayside in the 80’s - and yes, the area abuts the Hammels projects. Yikes!

The people in the above article apparently live on the eastern border of Belle Harbor nearest to the Rockaways public housing.

Many in the Rockaways don’t have roof to stand on. The storm destroyed many and fires ravished parts of Breezy Point, Belle Harbor, and Rockaway Park.
