The power restoration came as gasoline supplies headed to coastal zones devastated by the record storm surge and to motorists whose patience has been tested by gasoline rationing during the painstaking effort to rebuild.
With the U.S. presidential election just three days away, about 3 million homes and business remained without power in a region choked with storm debris and long gas lines reminiscent of the 1970s-era U.S. fuel shortage. Angry storm victims wondered when their lives would return to normal.

If you have to buy firewood, that's not very cost effective. Bulk at a discount is my motto. ;)
Cheaper to have a year's supply, and it's not like it's going to be cheaper next year. Told you I was a cheap bastard.

I was able to give some practical advice to someone in the threat area the other night, based on my experience doing the mountain-man thing.
That person was grateful for the information, it hadn't occured to him.
I think I'll just stick with keeping myself part of the solution and not part of the problem, and helping out in a Christian manner where I can.
We've got some Freepers up there in a bad situation, and my prayers continue for them. If I can be of any help to them, it's my Christian responsibility to do that.

There is no formal definition of SHTF. It's a term for any situation where normalcy has broken down for some period of time (whether hours, weeks, or longer) and the environment is life-threatening to those who are unprepared.
For Reginald Denny, being caught in the middle of the Rodney King riots without a gun was SHTF.
For the people left without power for a week after Sandy hit, being without food and water supplies and not having a Plan B to heat their homes is SHTF.
SHTF is whatever strains the limits of your resources and puts your survival at risk.
Me, too, Kart, I get private Freepmail asking for help, information. There are over 18,000 hits on the prep articles I write for Survival Podcast.
You and I have information we give to people so they can prepare. Neither you nor I wants anyone to suffer when they don't have too.
In the end, it is a person's choice to prep or not prep, but you and I and the rest of the preppers who put suggestions on these threads, want people to have the information so they can make a choice.
You know what, if we wanted people NOT to prep so we could gloat, this thread wouldn't be here and neither would all the rest you started about prepping.
So, you could shut down and have no prep threads, then we could gloat that people must be dying and they deserve to and we could have a glass of bubbly celebrating that people died. Hogwash, we want people to be self sufficient so they can ALL live.
If I knew the address of that 75 yr. old woman I read about who had to go down 14 floors of stairs because she had no water, I would have sent her a WaterBob - that really hurt me to read that. Did I gloat that she didn't have water? No, there were tears in my eyes.
Yardstick is dirt to think we don't care about people and I didn't ping him to this post because he IS dirt. He stated what his harassment is all about when he wrote, “To prepare for the full SHTF scenario requires committing to a lifestyle and certain expenses that I dont want to commit to.” There you have it, he doesn't want to do it so he dumps on those who do. Pure dirt.
Again I challenge you to post a open thread on FR and you can present you view point as well as your body of post showing your efforts to assist your fellow FReepers and and I will present mine and let our fellow FReepers choose who’s work has been the most beneficial.
Kart, you’re being sucked in by a troll. Again. Your thread has been hijacked - again - and turned into an attention whore’s notice-me-instead dance.
The only way to stop an attention whore is to suck the oxygen out of the dance. Do not respond. They hate being ignored worst of all.
Now, back to the real business of raising awareness and building a community.
