The purple benches at San Francisco's Harvey Milk Plaza were removed Friday following growing complaint that they had become a loophole for drunks and others to avoid the city's ordinance prohibiting sitting or lying on walkways.
The removal decision was made earlier this week by the Castro/Upper Market Community Benefit District, the community group that paid $40,000 to install the benches in 2010.
"It's about time," said Dan Glazer, owner of the nearby bakeshop Hot Cookie. "They pee, they defecate and they leave their garbage there. They have no respect for the plaza or for Harvey Milk and what he meant to our community."
But Hot Cookie employee Dylan Burditt disagreed.
"Generally, they're around, but that's just San Francisco," he said. "I think it's a drastic choice. Just because certain people are complaining, everybody else has to suffer (without benches)."
Jane Haggerstone, an employee at Sunday's Tanning Salon across from the plaza, echoed that sentiment.
"It's a shame because a lot of people have to wait for the buses and it would be nice for them to sit," she said.

*snicker*
I’ll see your snicker and raise you two guffaws.
Neither do I, but I would express it in a somewhat different manner.
We used to enjoy going to SF for a weekend to get away. The last couple of times we went, the homeless guys were so aggressive it was terrible. Haven’t been back in years and no plans to go.
I thought harvy milk was all about degeneracy and public exhibitionism. So what's the problem?!!
“Get out of the way! please! Oh my, this is terrible... Oh, the humanity! ...
Mighty intolerant of the gays who ram “tolerance” down our throats, if you ask me.
I was invited to the Google symposium a few weeks back and went to DT SF. It’s worse than L.A. downtown. It is ironic that the a park named after a fudgepacker is intolerant towards another minority.
Yup, Had to go there three times a year for meetings. After the third time I had to walk by a turd laying in the entrance of the office building I had to go to I told them forget it! Never went back! The creeps in SF can be seen in the eyes of San Fran Nan!
San Francisco is where culture left the arts and crawled into a petri dish.
I reside not too far from Frisco, but I only go there once every 10 years or so, and then only with extreme reluctance for something absolutely unavoidable.
Frisco IS a urinal...it's an icky, sick, sick place.

*snicker*
No, silly. It wasn’t a snicker. It was a twinkie.
Why aren’t the rich liberals taking care of these homeless people?
He "meant" men sticking their penis in another man's anus.
And that's it.
Having seen old film footage, I would have loved to have visited San Francisco back in the 1940s and 1950s. It looked marvelously inviting and atmospheric.
Nowadays? No chance in hell I’ll ever step one foot into that diseased, cretin-infested cesspool. Perhaps the only good thing I can think about it is that it helpfully serves as a magnet for degenerates and their liberal enablers, drawing them like flies to feces, away from decent people and decent communities.
Folsom Street festival??
