49,000 New Yorkers stuck in Public Housing w/o water or power.

Residents of Manhattan's 19-building, 1,191-apartment Jacob Riis projects, have been without power and water since late Monday evening, and there's been no sign of help from local government.

In all, city officials estimate some 49,000 public housing residents have been stranded by the storm, left without the resources to escape or find alternative lodging.

When Getty photographer Mario Tama ventured inside, he found residents huddled in living rooms lit by solitary candles and gas stoves running constantly for heat.

Here are a few images from Tama's visit on Thursday:

The Jacob Riis project is located on farmost edge of the East Village, between Avenue D and the Franklin D Roosevelt Drive and covering seven blocks between 6th and 13 street. Each of the 19 buildings is between six and 14 stories high.

Since the photographer did not see Big Gulps and salt shakers, Bloomberg didn’t see a problem

He might try it in New York, but the rest of the country won’t go along. Especially Texas.

Well, Bush’s administration took over from a useless mayor and governor within 1 day after Katrina, then rescued 20,000 people from flooded homes within 2 days, then evacuated 40,000 people out of New Orleans within 4 days of Katrina

Check the Katrina timeline

Barry, Bloomie, and Staypuft Christie are now at 4 days and counting...what’s their plan, Stan?

In a strange way, this is an important lesson that the people who are so dependent on Government need to learn: to take care of yourself. Then YOU (not the gov’t) can help others.

...49,000 public housing residents...

These are the welfare people who will be “waiting” forever to be taken care of. They to be moved to another city that can accomodate the suckers of life.

And remember it was Walmart that came through with power generators during Hurricane Katrina.

re: How many people and time do you think it would take just to visit each one of those apartments, assess the situation, come up with a plan and arrange proper logistics support?

That would not be necessary nor at all practical under the time constraints. Take a random sample to access the situation and needs and plan accordingly.

Imagine 49,000 obama phone ladies, Peggy’s, Juliuio’s, etc all in a tiny area.

That is what it is.

The $26.20 donation per marathon runner will make the difference, turn the tide, recede the waters, provide food, shelter, clean water and socks for everyone who left home without their socks.

I donated $$ to Glenn Becks Mercury One charity where all the money is going to local churches to supply folks with food and warmth and water. I am willing to give the church a chance first ..then i will think about a 35% overhead national org. Groups like this and Franklin Grahams org will serve these folks better

I’m in Jersey and I’m going with Romney - but I’m not sure how we can hold an election in this state with the way things are now. We still have at least 75% of the people in the state without power. Some communities are completely devastated. Even though Obama would normally win this state and it doesn’t matter - we still need to go through the motions and vote. Right now - I can’t see how it happens. People are more concerned about getting gas and surviving than voting. Maybe our state votes on another day.

The situation was a little different. New Orleans isn’t NYC and NJ. No 14 story apartments, no subways, no trains, no election, not this late in the season, easier for people to get helod off of a 1 or 2 story home than the 10th floor, etc. Also, the whole country watched Katrina head straight at NO for a week while Sandy twisted and turned and no one knew where/when landfall would be until the very last.
