Residents of Manhattan's 19-building, 1,191-apartment Jacob Riis projects, have been without power and water since late Monday evening, and there's been no sign of help from local government.
In all, city officials estimate some 49,000 public housing residents have been stranded by the storm, left without the resources to escape or find alternative lodging.
When Getty photographer Mario Tama ventured inside, he found residents huddled in living rooms lit by solitary candles and gas stoves running constantly for heat.
Here are a few images from Tama's visit on Thursday:
The Jacob Riis project is located on farmost edge of the East Village, between Avenue D and the Franklin D Roosevelt Drive and covering seven blocks between 6th and 13 street. Each of the 19 buildings is between six and 14 stories high.

You are very right! SA is a great organization always willing to help those in need.
The world must SURELY think we're over run with fa... uh... QUe.. uh... homosexuals these days!
Huh?
How is this even POSSIBLE??
We understand, Chris...
What color are THEIR t-shirts?
Thats the worse case scenario. I doubt anyone expected it. Notice that the protections for the subway entrances no way anticipated what happened.
Too bad I didn't have the version with the looter guy in there... oh well... :)
News 12 NJ predicted it (with absolute sincerity) the day before the storm.
“The world must SURELY think we’re over run with fa... uh... QUe.. uh... homosexuals these days!”
I’ve met newcomers from Spain/Portugal who expected the US to be 60% black based on the American television shows they’d seen over there.
LMAO
and probably 1/3 queer too....

It is bizarre how far “TV Land” has deviated from reality at this point; it is like reading about some world visited by Buck Rogers. The foreigners learn the reality quicky, though.
I mean anyone who had the ability to do anything about shoring up defenses against it,
Google “Vast Wasteland”
Interesting; a friend of mine that taught in an urban school district here in northeast NJ used to wear a pin shaped like a television, with “Turn it off!” emblazoned across the screen. It should be a national movement; people have been lulled into docility with television.
Without television libs are doomed.
One image is worth a thousand lies...
I live here, and I'd think that too if all I saw were TV. I'd also think that whites were a bunch of dummies who fortunately had the wise black friend to set them straight about things like what car to buy, etc. US is 12.9 percent black, but about 49% of the food stamp/ebt recipients are black. About 2/3rds of the violent crime in the US are committed by blacks Certainly 100% of the presidential corruption and incompetence over the last four years was committed by blacks.
“I’d also think that whites were a bunch of dummies who fortunately had the wise black friend to set them straight about things like what car to buy, etc.”
Yes, white women are also omniscient in regards to their menfolk. Gay people aren’t the rest-stop haunting freaks we see in the news, either; they are actually the nicest, most mature people (and better parents than straight people).
I live next to Newark, NJ; the whites (and blacks and Hispanics) in my town know the real deal, and get out of Newark before dark.
You have my condolences for living in NJ at any time, but especially now with the massive mess that is being exacerbated by the greedy unions and incompetent government (is there any other kind?)
“You have my condolences for living in NJ at any time”
Thanks; years ago it was a great place to work & live (mountains, the ocean, woods and farmland all within an hour or two of each other), but now so many decent jobs have left I couldn’t imagine why people/businesses would even rebuild after this storm. Our taxes have remained high while real salaries have fallen, and they can’t squeeze anything else out of the people.
