New Jersey Is Running Out Of Gasoline And Police Are On Hand
Robert Johnson and Geoffrey Ingersoll
Nov. 1, 2012, 9:21 PM
Once free of the confines of storm stricken Manhattan, it doesn't take long to realize that traveling through New Jersey presents its own daunting set of problems.
The first line of cars stretched along the highway for miles raises more questions than concerns, until it becomes clear that the three mile string of vehicles are all waiting for gasoline to continue on their way.
Eighty percent of New Jersey stations don't even have gas, while police guard closed stations and open stations alike. At one set of pumps we saw a driver who pulled in from from desperation, cutting in front of the line. Drivers near the pumps piled from their cars threatening violence and when we left, the newcomer still sat in his car, windows rolled up, head on his hand waiting.
Some stations were expecting fuel deliveries today, others had capped purchases hoping not to run out.
Reserve tanks in the area were drained before Sandy to avoid an environmental disaster. The Arthur Kill waterway is closed for major oil spill cleanup, which means no deliveries will be coming from the port in Bayonne. Many terminals themselves are without power and the extent of damage is yet unknown.
Residents told us over-and-over today, generally with a shake of the head and a look into the distance: "This is like nothing I've ever seen."

They can put Snooki on a hamster wheel for their power
I've tried some of those suckers on a 25 yr veh and found them severely wanting. I spilled 1 out of 5 gallons of gas.
After that I got an integrated metal funnel and outlet tube resulting in much less spillage.
With the price of gas these days, there is great incentive to have NO spillage.
Johnny! Where you been? Missed you.
Yeah, I found stuff online about hacking the spouts. It’s the princple of the thing that galls me.
And don’t even get me started about mercury fever thermometers. Or inexpensive, effective rat bait that’s been outlawed.
The first photo looks like the gas station/convenience store were Phil Leotardi was iced, and had his head exploded by the rolling mini van.
A friend of mine in NJ tells me that murders and looting are rampant in the most devastated areas but are not being reported in the press.
Mine are the 'good' kind. I buy them at yard sales now for $2-3 dollars each.
All you need is an Obama halloween mask and a tire pressure guage.
I guarantee you'll be famous if you survive.
I doubt they would vote for Romney as well, but if they stayed home on election day to spite bronco, that would help.
Well, all the media attention is about to start looking like Obama’s Katrina.
Widespread power outage is the problem. The storm damage was not nearly so catastrophic as the repeated showing of the same images attempts to imply. Oceanfront houses are damaged but still there. Compare that to any truly catastrophic storm. Look at Pass Christian, Mississippi, beachfront scoured clean of any structure for blocks inland. What I see with this storm however, is that beach erosion and flooding are no different from every tropical storm that makes landfall. Piers and other oceanfront structures badly damaged, houses undermined and collapsed on the oceanfront, major erosion of oceanfront roadways. This is normal folks.
If I were there I’d make arrangements to leave, that said. Stupid, angry people who feel they’re not getting their due appear to be about to go on a rampage.
Urban and suburban dwellers, watch and learn. This is a teachable moment just as Katrina was. It won’t be so easy to get out of harm’s way if you wait too long, and the conditions that set it all off might seem to be not all that bad.
Surreal.
Making effective rat poison isn't difficult either, but it can get you talked about if you have a rough spot in inter-spousal relationships. Me, I'm still single, celibate, and sane, so nobody but me and the rats would know if I were to make some. They don't tend to tell anyone, even if I did.

The press is having a hard time finding a way to blame Bush, on this one.
>> it can get you talked about if you have a rough spot in inter-spousal relationships
What can’t? :-)
Where is our KILLER president?
I don't always have it with me, so the hack rides around in my brain taking up un-used space, just in case I should need it, and don't have the metal flex funnel handy.
Field expedient. Great concept to live by.

>> Mine are the ‘good’ kind. I buy them at yard sales now for $2-3 dollars each.
I need to look around. It’s on the to-do list.
>> No Spill Gas Can - - A Farce?
Yeah, that’s what kills me... as much of a PITA as they are to use, as the video demonstratesl, the sad fact is they FAIL at their intended purpose of minimizing raw gas evaporation!
i hate the epa...
All those states elected Barak Obama who canceled the pipeline and put a moratorium on offshore drilling so screw them. Let them walk or get a horse. Good luck finding hay because all the farmers are planting corn because of the subsidies for ethanol. Or let them ride a bike. Screw you liberal whining wusses.
bttt
Since I now have a fleet stored at multiple locations around the country, each location has its refilling (and inflation, charging, etc.) hardware on site.
Some folks rely on can do and a game face.
