New York taxi and car service companies started pulling vehicles off the road on Thursday as the fuel crunch deepened, with the vast majority of storm-hit service stations in the greater New York area now out of gasoline or without power.
Outages and fuel shortages have forced many gasoline stations to shut, and now threaten efforts in New York and New Jersey to get back to business after Hurricane Sandy.
Large numbers of homes and businesses that have lost power are also reliant on gasoline- or diesel-run generators, including many of the Wall Street banks in lower Manhattan.

But, but, but...bad things like this can’t happen under Obama’s hurricane response only George W. Bushes! Unlike Bush Obama cares about people! So the gas pumps should magically refill with the power of “hope and change”, maybe the people waiting in lines aren’t “hoping” hard enough?
Well, just plug in your Prius.....oh....neve rmind.
Oh to have a bicycle and carrier business today in NYC! You could rack it up baby and get uptown pretty good time too if you are in good shape!
It’s all kumbaya until one has no access to gas for three or four days. Worse if no access to ac or heat too.
Shortages happen when you have anti-gouging laws.
Imagine if prices were allowed to rise during a shortage. It would encourage conservation by consumers. Most importantly, selling gasoline would be much more profitable in NY than in the rest of the country. This would encourage suppliers to ship gasoline into NY from other parts of the country to take advantage of those profits. This would help stabilize prices and direct the vital resource to where it is most needed.
How can this ever be? Our Dear Leader is doing such a wonderful job taking care of this!! My government and all the TV networks told me so!
But I thought under Obama the ocean levels were going to recede. Guess that didn’t happen off of NY or NJ.

I enjoyed your comment - Very well said. A market price reflects the relative value associated with a product. In fact, the mere possibility of recovering high prices may provide incentive for individuals and for business (who would be incurring storage and inventory costs) to create stand-by inventory of needed products just on the possibility there is an emergency at which time the products may be sold at higher prices to recover costs and make a profit.

The worst is yet to be seen when the lines to buy gasoline grow longer. A lot of gasoline will have water in it.
Then will come the scam artists who are there to do "repairs."
And Christie will be blamed because he was too quick to take credit for nothing...the day after the storm. He looks incompetent to me. All talk because he doesn't know what to do !

Watch what happens when hundreds or thousands of cars run out of gas sitting in the middle of the road. Gas or no gas they won’t be going anywhere.
Can’t those folks simply check the air pressure in their tires?
I suspect this is going to get far worse, very soon.
Not to mention.....it’s cold and people want the gas for generators.

Gasoline has become scarce, the ploice are now monitoring the 2 gas stations near my work by the Long Island-Queens border - these are the only 2 stations around that have gas.
There are also a few cars on the side of the parkways stranded without gas.
Agree...I’m he in NJ and have believed this since the start...this is 2 days away from going in a very bad direction..If things are not back to some semblance of functionality by Monday, it is not going to be pretty...
