FIELD POLL: Tax measure support drops below 50 percent
SACRAMENTO – A new Field Poll shows that support for Gov. Jerry Brown’s tax-increase ballot measure has dipped below 50 percent for the first time this year, with the initiative’s fate hinging on supporters’ ability to win over undecided voters.
Today’s Field Poll shows that 48 percent of voters support Prop. 30 and 38 percent oppose it. Fourteen percent of voters are undecided. In mid-September, 51 percent of voters backed Prop. 30 and 36 percent opposed it, with 13 percent undecided.
The survey found a sharp decline in support for Prop. 38, an initiative bankrolled by wealthy attorney Molly Munger that would raise the income tax on almost all filers to help pay for schools. The survey found that 34 percent of voters plan to vote for the initiative, down from 46 percent in early July.
Prop. 30 would temporarily increase the sales tax by one-quarter of one percentage point and impose an additional marginal tax rate on single filers with taxable income above $250,000 and couples with taxable income above $500,000.
Despite the drop in support for the measure, Field Poll Director Mark DiCamillo said the poll should be “mostly good news for the governor.”
The proponents’ campaign has to get just two percent of the undecided voters. Those voters are more likely to view the governor favorably, believe they pay about the right amount of taxes, and worry about promised automatic cuts to schools if Prop. 30 fails, according to the poll.
The share of likely voters opposed to the initiatives has ranged from 36 percent to 38 percent all year.

The Field Poll has a history of liberal and biased sampling. If Prop 30 is only at 48% according to the Field Poll, one could easily assume that true support for Prop 30 is 5-10% lower than the Field Poll results. Also, California propositions have historically needed to be well over 50% at this late in the game to assure passage. Governor Moonbeam's Prop 30 seems to be crashing and burning before our eyes.
It doesn’t matter if it Prop. 30 fails. I assure you that Gov. Moonbeam and his unions will be able to find their tax increases somehow.

It probably would pass easily if they were just taxing the evil rich but they are raising everyones taxes. Apparently we don’t hate the rich enough to raise our own taxes.

If CA citizens want to tax themselves, who are we to stand in the way. The fact that this ballot measure is even close, tells you a lot about what type of citizens are left... the takers, not makers. A lot of makers have been wisely moving out for years.

Just towed my utility trailer across the Benicia Bridge. Vehicle toll: $5.00, Additional for the trailer, $10.00. And that’s up from $2.00 additional a year ago, and $5.00 additional more recently. So in the last year a car and single-axle trailer has gone from $6.00 to $15.00! If I remember correctly, an 18 wheeler is $35.00!
