The military asked for 12 helicopters to rescue the Iranian hostages. Jimmy Carter, always the micromanager, agreed to the mission, but would approve only 8 helicopters. Three helicopters had trouble along the way, and the military had already told Carter they needed a minimum of 6 to make it to the destination. Hence the remaining 5 were recalled. This could easily have cost all the hostages their lives. So I give Carter very little credit.
