What's the explanation for Mitt Romney's unparalleled breakout? A few weeks ago, the Romney campaign was regarded as dead in the water. The polls (with the exception of Rasmussen) had the campaign uniformly down, giving Obama up to half a dozen points. Voter interest was phlegmatic at best. A combined Chicago-media offensive appeared to have put Romney on the ropes. The consensus was that Obama would cruise to another victory, one paralleling and perhaps even exceeding his triumph over John McCain four years ago.
Today, little more than an electoral-cycle heartbeat later, the situation is utterly reversed. The big mo belongs to Romney. The polls, excepting a few weird left-wing holdouts of the Reuters variety, show Romney with comfortable leads ranging from 2% to 5%. The swing states are trending in his direction. The expectations of the GOP are those of the 3rd Army roaring into the Reich. As for Obama, he has displayed every sign of a man on the run -- desperation moves, incipient hysteria, vast and expensive efforts to magnify minor Romney gaffes, appeals to Big Bird and Gloria Allred. His expression in the debates was that of a man facing his karma, more haggard and haunted with each appearance. At least one person in the campaign knows full well that the game is up.
This remarkable turnaround is unmatched in recent American political history, and as such, it requires an explanation. Not many have been floated as of yet. The most popular so far holds that Anne and Tagg Romney, acting as Mitt's consiglieres, pushed aside most the campaign's professional political operatives in a successful effort to encourage "Mitt to be Mitt."
Everyone involved denies that anything of the sort occurred, and that may well be the truth...

Given every election since 2010, and earlier even, Dems will take a drubbing again. Landslide coming. Landslide and its mandate is sorely needed.
That's right on!
Also, the fewer useless government employees the faster we can pay off the debt!
Is your first name Debbie, and your last name Downer, by chance?
The guy can clearly function as a CEO (it's not above his pay-grade).

I'll say that Mitt planned his work and then worked his plan.
It wasn’t Mondale in the tank....but I see your point; well made.
(It was Dukakis in the tank.....)
Kinda like or handsome gov, Rick Perry; we have to bop him upside the head every now and then when he starts leaning too far left.
I would like the discussion to stay in our reality. Not some reality that the author made up. I was only criticizing the first couple of lines anyway. They made it sound totally unprecedented that a Republican could win.
I’ve talked to a good number of either formerly-undecided or formerly-leaning Obama voters who are now voting for Romney.
To a person, their switch was all based on the first debate.
Obama spent six months and probably close to $200 million painting Romney as Ebenezer Scrooge. The problem with that strategy is that Obama needed Ebenezer Scrooge to show up to the debate(s).
When Ebenezer Scrooge didn’t show up, people realized two things: 1.) Obama had lied to them and 2.) Romney was an ok guy and perfectly acceptable as President.
Those both hurt Obama’s popularity/credibility and put the campaign back onto The Economy rather than Romney-is-Scrooge.
It might be painted as a risky strategy on Obama’s part, but I don’t think so. Reason is that he had nothing else to run with or on. He was only left with painting Romney as an out of touch, arrogant, uncaring and elitist plutocrat while praying (it’s SO tempting to say he was facing East while doing so, but I’ll refrain) that Romney would remain in-character.
Exactly so.
Americans of every socio-economic strata have suffered tremendously under this president. He's instilled a lack of confidence that is truly appalling, and unprecedented for an American Commander In Chief. As a result, only the most hardened leftoid detritus are still lending him anything approaching enthusiastic support.
The man is an abject embarrassment, and worse than that, a leftist ideologue who has used the full weight and power of the presidency to bend our nation to his alien and extra-constitutional will.
I can't help but think that even Democrats have been frightened by this. Look at the loss of support he has among his most loyal constituencies, and I think this is plainly visible.
oops, I knew that. TY
I'm pretty sure that's why he's in the driver's seat now. Americans have endured four years of the ten year old behind the wheel, and after countless crashes and near death experiences, they want an experienced adult to take over.
Is it any wonder that Romney became the nominee? He is Obama's exact opposite.
Then you should have pasted in the quote from the article so everyone knew what you were talking about. You only succeeded in making yourself look like a sourpuss.
And for the record, the author neither said nor intended any such thing. Read more carefully next time, and consider the source.
Nicely written. Maybe it’s even true.
We’ll know about this time next week. If Mitt wins, I will man up and say I was wrong to push my “rip Obama’s heart out and eat it on TV” strategy, and that Mitt’s “Mr. Rogers loves fluffy kittens” campaign was right after all.
Well written analysis. Four states are voting on gay marriage next week. The first 32 voted against gay marriage. We’ll see what happenes. With that said, the issue really isn’t about gay marriage. It’s about a states right to define marriage. I personally think a state has that right.
I just read your post three times. Excellent analysis. You said more in a few sentences than I could have said in three paragraphs. You’ve perfectly described the difference between these two men and their approaches to problem solving. Bravo!!!
I’ve been kind of down tonight with the Hurricane Pumping BO up but, after that analysis I realize that Mitt has an answer for what Obama is doing and we will see it tomorrow. Most importantly, Mitts rsponse won’t be desperate or phony, either. It will simply be Mitt building on what he’s already said previously...a logical exension of an already well thought out campaign.
