A Toronto pedestrian struck by a flying sign appears to be the first fatality of Hurricane Sandy to occur on Canadian soil.
Just after sunset on Monday evening, a woman walking near a Staples Business Depot in west Toronto was struck by a sign blown free by high winds and later pronounced dead at the scene, Toronto Police confirmed.

How the hell did it get to Toronto already? I live just east of Syracuse, and it’s doing nothing here.

"Staples Business Depot." ..... Staples huh??? ..... Hmmmmmm ..... guess Mitt Romney killed that poor lady. Death by Bain one could say. Cuz if Romney didn't help save Staples .... mybe the poor woman would still be alive today!!
OK .... I hope I don't need a sarcasm tag here.

We’re at the edge of the storm now- it’s about 1,000 miles wide. The eye is supposed to cross Lake Ontario near you on Thursday. They’re expecting the winds here to peak after 1am with gusts of 60mph.
This is the first hurricane to hit Toronto since 1954.

Yikes, all the way up in Toronto? I’m in eastern Massachusetts and it’s really windy, lots of rain, lots of people without power but all’s OK (so far) where *I* am.Of course that could change.I was listening to a Chicago station on the web this afternoon and they said that they expect to feel it there...lots of wind, etc.

What a tragic accident. The wind is pretty bad and its getting worse in Mount Hope (just outside Hamilton).

I’m midway up the Maine coast. Winds gusting around 35-50 mph now. No rain though.

At the moment blowing lots of branches down my street. Post-tropical storms frequently hit this area but by the time they get this far inland they’ve weakend to the point where it’s just another low-pressure system. This time it’s hitting Southern Ontario pretty hard, something that hasn’t happened since 1954.

Sorry to hear that. Hope you are safe. Living in Houston, I have experienced hurricanes and they are no fun.
