From the Weather Channel: It Could Happen Tomorrow takes a close look at unbelievable yet possible acts of nature, which could spell disaster for cities across America. Part drama, part science and part history, It Could Happen Tomorrow searches the past for clues to theoretical weather events still to come and explores their potential impact on our modern world.
I’m close enough to the action here in DE and have been out and around enough today to believe it really isn’t a hurricane, and now I have found the explanation.http://www.accuweather.com/en/weather-news/national-hurricane-center-no-a/839301
“The National Hurricane Center (NHC) issues advisories, forecasts, and warnings on tropical cyclones - the generic term for hurricanes, tropical storms, and tropical depressions. Sometime prior to making landfall, Hurricane Sandy is expected to lose its characteristics as a tropical cyclone and take on the structure of a wintertime low-pressure area. Because the National Hurricane Center only issues advisories on tropical cyclones, there will be changes in the flow of information coming out of the NWS when this transition occurs.”
I thought it was already happening. Channel 349 Direct TV shows live stream coverage.
Sandy produced a great sunset here in Michigan.
I noticed that too!
Quite a gorgeous red!
It is official now. According to Fox. No longer a Hurricane. And since it has combined with the cold storm that was west of Sandy, it no longer has a true eye, so they have backed off on calling landfall. My guess is this has not been a hurricane for the past 24 hours. There is no way Sandy maintained sustained winds of exactly 75 mph for a day and a half. That surface wind speed is just an approximation based on the upper wind speeds measured by the search planes. In the reality of nature, there had to be some fluctuations if the sustained winds of 75 mph were accurately measured directly. They keep the sustained wind speed 2 mph above tropical storm level at exactly 75 mph for at least a day and a half. It probably strengthened a little when it went over the Gulf Stream, but 90 MPH sustained is just impossible in a hurricane that was getting its western side ripped clean by the cold front.
A year ago at this time, I was without power for four days (Halloween snowstorm) but have not lost it in this storm yet and hopefully that remains the case.
Good news is that most of New England should be getting back to normal tomorrow and we can turn our focus back to Tuesday's election (and Halloween on Wednesday).
I keep looking at the NYC cams and FoxNews live feed and it just looks like a light, drizzly evening.
Shepard Smith is warning about the flooding subways and the corrosive nature of the salt water on the electrical wiring blah blah blah!
If it weren’t for the crane and the face of an apt building falling off you wouldn’t even know this was a Hurricane.
None of the media can decide whether it has made landfall or NOT!
Yeah, the MSM coverage of disasters is always a hoot. When CNN found out that Sandy had vastly increased its forward speed, the anchors all started saying that will make everything worse. Guess they do not require physics classes in journalism school. Then the shrimp from bourbon street (Shep) starting noting that the early landfall will make the coastal flooding less severe because it would be before high tide. Which was correct, but 2 hours later he was saying landfall would be delayed due to the changing of Sandy from a tropical storm to a cold storm. Then he hyperventilated that it would be making landfall during high tide. Oh the horror !
That is good news. This new storm, not a monster, still has the potential to make some serious rainfall flooding and snow. And it will have to move east eventually. So hopefully she wont hit you on the way back out to sea.
Cavuto has shown that dangling crane several times in the past hour.
He's saying hundreds of thousands are without power, due to the storm. And, that there's no telling how long it could take to restore power to all. Hopefully, power equipment from across the country is on standby.
Prayers up for all.
Maybe a media hype?????? 50 mile per hour winds, reported to be 95, you know how they do exaggerate.
They are trying to claim gusts of 100 mph are occurring at those heights right now in New York, yet a crane dangling is hardly moving at all. Again, basic physics say the crane would be swaying violently in wind gust of 100 mph.
I have been watching the live cams of the different portions of Times Square non-stop for the last 5 hours and there are all of these people milling/walking around with umbrellas that aren’t even blowing in the wind.
Just saw a real time display of wind gusts in the area at the surface. Gusts were 40 to 79 mph. It looked like about 5-10 % of the reported gusts were just at Hurricane strength. So this was not a sustained hurricane went it made landfall. They admit that. And no place on land experienced sustained hurricane winds for a significant amount of time. It is not a monster, it is not a super storm, and it is not even a hurricane. Basically a strong tropical storm that combined with a cold front to simulate a noreaster with slightly stronger wind then usual.

You captured it perfectly!
