RIVIERA BEACH At age 20, Nicole Shibley is ready to vote in her first presidential election.
The Yale University junior has her candidates selected. She understands the importance of making sure her ballot arrives at the Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections Office by Nov. 6.
The only problem: No ballot.
The ballot she said she ordered Sept. 18 still hasnt arrived. Each time she calls the elections office she said she gets a different explanation for the delay. Last week, officials promised her it would arrive on Saturday. It didnt.
I would really like to vote for president the first time I can, said Shibley, a 2010 Suncoast High School graduate who lives in North Palm Beach.
Shes worried a bureaucratic glitch will rob her of her right to vote. Shes not alone.
As dozens of temporary workers spent hours Tuesday in a Riviera Beach warehouse hand-copying absentee ballots that were sullied by a printing error, others in far-flung areas of the country are wondering why they havent received absentee ballots they requested more than a month ago.
This is absolutely ridiculous, said Helane Levy, of Wellington. She said she ordered a ballot for her 96-year-old mother at the end of September. Every time I call, they say its going out, she said. Shes still waiting.

and the beat goes on....
If this were a soldier in Afghanistan or anywhere the press would go ho hum.
The real scandal is that our armed forces are mostly disenfranchised. There should be a federal law that no election count is final until every serviceperson who requested a ballott on time has returned their ballot.
Don’t worry, Nicole. You will still get to vote. Well, not exactly. Whoever has all those ballots will vote for you. Feel better?
I hope they are still using those butterfly ballots in Palm Beach County. They worked like a charm in 2000.
Dateline America’s Wang. Dangling Chad county easily befuddled
At least we’re not voting with Facebook like buttons (yet)
Palm Beach what a surprise! /sarc
Getting the run around. Go pick one up, fill it out there and give to them or go vote early
How about going the polls and voting the old fashioned way. All this other stuff is a recipe for fraud. I am no sympathy for able bodied people who can’t get off their A** and go vote in person the way it is suppose to be.
She's supposed to get off her ass and drive from Connecticut to Florida to vote?
That being asked, has anyone checked to see if this students is registered in Connecticut and Florida and intends to vote in both states?
Seems like it would not be difficult for a college student to cast votes in two places - their home town and the place where they go to school. I don’t know what kind of safeguards they have to prevent it, especially if it is two different states.
Isn’t the die on the right of the photo BOGUS?
Two spot and Five spot are supposed to be on opposite sides?
I know that the opposite sides add up to seven. I didn’t make the graphic, though.
Good catch. Not many people notice it. [smiles]
Ah, the nostalgia of it all as the Valley of the Butterfly Ballot demands recognition in 2012.
