Original title: Romney won the presidential debate by looking presidential. Obama had a painful case of Biden's smile
-----------------------------------------
Romney won the third presidential debate – and how he did it was encapsulated in a single exchange. The candidates were discussing military spending and Romney had just accused Obama of making harmful cutbacks. The President wheeled out what must have seemed like a great, pre-planned zinger: “I think Governor Romney maybe hasn't spent enough time looking at how our military works. You mentioned the navy, for example, and that we have fewer ships than we did in 1916. Well, governor, we also have fewer horses and bayonets because the nature of our military's changed.” The audience laughed, Obama laughed, I laughed. It was funny.

But here’s why it was also a vote loser. For a start, Twitter immediately lit up with examples of how the US Army does still use horses and bayonets (horses were used during the invasion of Afghanistan). More importantly, this was one example of many in which the President insulted, patronised and mocked his opponent rather than put across a constructive argument. His performance was rude and unpresidential. Obama seemed to have a touch of the Bidens, wriggling about in his chair, waving his hands dismissively and always – always – smirking in Romney’s direction. By contrast, Romney sucked up the abuse and retained a rigid poker face all night. He looked like a Commander in Chief; Obama looked like a lawyer. Who would you rather vote for?

I thought the “horses and bayonets” was lame. And Obama looked like he couldn’t treat his opponent with respect.

Worse than lame- it showed a serious lack of understanding about the strategic and tactical value of our Navy in today's world. Probably his worst "gaffe" of the night and hopefully it will bite him a time or two in the next two weeks.

Money line from this analysis:

It’s almost lucky that Obama isn’t running unopposed in this election because then he’d have nothing to run on at all.

I agree with you, and Obama thinks he can recreate reality with his denials. Everything Romney said about Obama’s foriegn policy was true. Obama tried to say otherwise, but the truth is the truth, Iran is much closer to having the bomb, and Obama has turned his back on Isreal. Obama is a bold faced liar.

What you said is so true. I hope and pray that Obama and his people are defeated on November 6, they should not prosper from their lies and attempts to deceive the voters. I hope that enough people noticed what you said.

I think you made a great point, Romney has a strategy going on, he was playing poker now that I look back at what happened and what people are saying. Today is going to be very interesting, and tomorrow even better when Trump makes his announcement. I can’t wait!

Transcripts are great.

I think CSPAN also will have the video up for quite a while for all of the debates.

I like watching with transcript in hand.

Jujitsu. That is what Romney did last night.

Obama was looking to attack attack... Romney did not give him many lines of attack, so -bama angrily sat there and finally manufactured them, for which Romney said “attacking me is not policy” or some such.

Obama destroyed himself last night - anyone who had not decided unabashedly “FOR” -bama did NOT come over to his side last night. Romney gained many.

Truly Brilliant.

I saw that later — the graphic made me laugh and I thought it was a clever Romney ad. But it isn’t. I doubt it will help the Won.

He did that in the second debate also. On the split screen, while Romney was speaking, Obama would sit there in this absurd motionless pose, staring unblinking, and leaning forward like a bird of prey waiting to pounce, or a snake about to strike.

Pathetically, he did not have it in him to do either one.

Obama’s hunched over posture, staring like a dog beside the dinner table reminded me of that picture from the situation room when they raided the Obama sin Laden compound. He looked like a child next to Rommey.
