Original title: Romney won the presidential debate by looking presidential. Obama had a painful case of Biden's smile
-----------------------------------------
Romney won the third presidential debate and how he did it was encapsulated in a single exchange. The candidates were discussing military spending and Romney had just accused Obama of making harmful cutbacks. The President wheeled out what must have seemed like a great, pre-planned zinger: I think Governor Romney maybe hasn't spent enough time looking at how our military works. You mentioned the navy, for example, and that we have fewer ships than we did in 1916. Well, governor, we also have fewer horses and bayonets because the nature of our military's changed. The audience laughed, Obama laughed, I laughed. It was funny.
But heres why it was also a vote loser. For a start, Twitter immediately lit up with examples of how the US Army does still use horses and bayonets (horses were used during the invasion of Afghanistan). More importantly, this was one example of many in which the President insulted, patronised and mocked his opponent rather than put across a constructive argument. His performance was rude and unpresidential. Obama seemed to have a touch of the Bidens, wriggling about in his chair, waving his hands dismissively and always always smirking in Romneys direction. By contrast, Romney sucked up the abuse and retained a rigid poker face all night. He looked like a Commander in Chief; Obama looked like a lawyer. Who would you rather vote for?

Yeah, he did. He looked mean and nasty. Romney looked poised and presidential.
Wow! Even the Telegraph has turned on Obama.
The UK telegraph and other UK rags like the Daily Mail have been heavily conservative, even if you include the tabloid trash.
The only anti-American, leftie UK newspaper known to Freepers is the Guardian UK. The idiot editors of that paper even physically tried to “arrest” Dick Cheney while in the UK..
I especially liked the use of the word "nickel." "Dime" is so overused.
Romney won. Obama was clearly trying to Alinsky polarize or bait him.
The President came across demented. The US is badly served with a demented President.
Four more years of President “ships that have planes land on them” is not survivable.
Obama needs to eat the lithium, not to be ranting about batteries.
True as far as it goes.
Obama has pretty much engineered a fiscal crisis that is going to hit early in the next Presidential term. There will be a lot of hard choices that will need to be made.
Not much we can do about that, unfortunately.
In Romney we have a very pragmatic man who knows how run things and turn them around. with Romney the pain from the crisis will be less severe and the recovery time will be shorter and we will come out the other side as a leaner, more efficient and very wised up but still free America
With Obama the fiscal crisis will be used to ram Obamas Left Wing, Marxist agenda down our throats
The next election is not about avoiding a fiscal crisis, we are already in one we just dont feel it because we are borrowing from the future like crazy to float the system. We will feel the pain when we run out of borrowing capability and have to have the terrible reality that in 2009 when Obama took office we were in a bad economy and had a large national debt, as Obama leaves office we are in an even worse economy and the government is close to bankruptcy.
If we keep spending we collapse our currency we have huge amount of people out of work, no hope for a job and no money left to pay for the safety net
If we stop spending we have huge amount of people out of work, no hope for a job and no money left to pay for the safety net but our currency may not collapse
Not a whole lot of difference really.
This election is really about what the country looks like after the crisis. The choice is America as we know it if we elect Romney or the Fundamentally Changed America of Obamas Marxist vision if we don't
The only thing I learned from this debate is that Bob Scheiffer needs to retire.
I think my dad paid $1750 or so for his seeblau '64.
To the unwashed O could have made a lot of points had he not resorted to petulance. But he instead contrasted himself to Romney.
For two debates Romney came out fighting. In this third debate I was taken aback at how different his tone was. But in retrospect I think he just rope-a-doped Obama to hurt himself with two key groups: women and undecideds. We’ll see.
And that his pupils are dialated.
I was unable to watch debate- therefore had to wait for transcript. I think Romney won debate near the end when he laid out 5 steps for economic recovery and tied it to foreign policy. Obama had no sensible rebuttal, moderator tried to steer answer back to foreign policy and Romney continued to make his point.
This may not have been as apparent in live version as Obama and mod kept interrupting.
I read full transcript on link from npr that poster put up about 4 hrs past FR-
How much of it was real and how much was second-rate method acting on the fly is probably unknowable at this point, but he managed to look pretty small regardless.

Agreed - we were commenting on Facebook about that very thing. It was a great strategy and apparent to us while watching.
My Son-in-Law was in the Old Guard and participated in many a funeral at Arlington National Cemetery. I'm damn glad he wasn't listening to the debate, and didn't hear Obama say that.
A brilliant summary and frighteningly prophetic IMHO.
