Romney as a Manager: Unhurried and Socratic By MICHAEL BARBARO, SHERYL GAY STOLBERG and MICHAEL WINES. BOSTON As governor of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney could not resist burrowing into the bureaucratic weeds: He once took the statewide math and reading test for 10th graders, then startled his education commissioner by calling to say, I like No. 14 and rattling off the answer.
As head of the private equity firm Bain Capital, he was so uncomfortable cutting loose struggling employees that a legend grew: executives sent in to his office to be fired emerged thinking they had been promoted.
And as a candidate for president this year, he resisted pressure from advisers to select a running mate before leaving on a high-profile trip overseas, insisting that he makes better decisions with time and reflection.
Mr. Romneys bid for the White House largely hinges on his own narrowly drawn image of himself as a chief executive: the data-splicing, cost-cutting turnaround expert. But dozens of interviews with those who have worked for him over the past 30 years in the Mormon Church, business, the Olympics and state government offer a far more textured portrait of the management style that he might bring to the presidency.

The more yo read about his private life, the more you got to like him. He is a man who deserves respect for the life he has lived.
George and Mitt Romney, who would have been 11 years old, in 1958.
Nice story. I was never a big fan of Romney but he has really impressed me as the campaign has worn on. He has the chance to become a great president.
He really does love this country, and seems like a genuinely nice guy - despite his media-created image. And he’s very smart. It’s nice to go into a press conference, debate or interview and not have to worry that he’s going to fumble for words. Although he does have a habit of getting overly excited about things. But it’s a nice trait to have - especially coming off Obama who cares only about himself. I think America is ready to have a grown up in the White House.
This photo reminds me of ‘Leave it to Beaver’, with Beaver and his dad.
Wow, I didn’t read every word, but this surprisingly seems to be a pretty positive Romney story from the NY Times.
What a precious photo.
That reminds me of one of his lines at the Al Smith dinner—referring to possible Democratic candidates in 2016 he singled out Cuomo and asked why he thought that having served one term as a governor and having had a father who was a governor was sufficient qualification to be President.
His passion for mastering policy and deliberative decision-making evokes the man he wishes to replace, Barack Obama.***
LOL That yarn was unraveled about 3 years ago.
Where are the pictures of Obama sitting in his daddy’s lap?
Broken marriages(if they were married) a drunken father, perhaps born illegitimately these things effect a life.
Th last two Democrat Presidents have been from broken homes, drunken fathers, strange Mothers, one a rapist, and pervert who stuffs womens Vagina’s with cigars, while masturbating, the other a suspected homosexual.
Both winning the women’s vote.(WTF is wrong with these women?)
Ward Cleaver & The Beaver; remember it well, back in the day...
I can’t wait.
A very good article from the NYT. I wonder what page it was buried on.
They know.
Front page.
They know.
They made a couple of half hearted attempts to draw Obama Romney parallels, but realized the absurdity of it...
...Mr. Romney loathes pushing out people with whom he works closely and will do just about anything to avoid it an approach that has inspired deep loyalty to him even as it has raised questions about his ability to make tough personnel calls, as presidents inevitably must. (Mr. Obama, for instance, is on his third chief of staff.)
(Couldn't have anything to do with the ideologically dogmatic Valerie Jarrett, could it?)
They seriously undermined their own attempts to paint him as someone who likes to fire people by writing about how loyal his people are because he doesn't like to fire them.
I hate to admit it...the NYTimes is still the best when it comes to the long form narrative.
SAVING FOR LATER
Unfortunately, they'll probably be successful and the President-elect will grant the Times in-depth interviews only to see his words twisted and taken out of context as the 'newspaper of record' begins a four-year war to convince America and the world that Romney is Hitler and Stalin personified. Why not? It worked on George W. Bush.
Granted, Bush gave them lots of ammunition but Romney will have to do some hard things as president if he expects to get us out of the economic swamp Obama has made and that will be fodder for 24/7 left-wing attacks on Romney that, unlike Bush, he'll have to counter, as Reagan did. Not by confrontation but by simply being the smart, effective leader and decent human being he's always been. Good luck, Mister President.
“Mr. Romney loathes pushing out people with whom he works closely and will do just about anything to avoid it an approach that has inspired deep loyalty to him even as it has raised questions about his ability to make tough personnel calls, as presidents inevitably must.”
This write-up “humanizes” Romney in making him less “robotic” but I guess I’m not altogether convinced it’s a complimentary portrait, as the above quote signals: is he up to being tough enough to be president?
A related concern I had was remembering Jimmy Carter, whose obsessive attention to detail led him to put himself in charge of scheduling the WH tennis courts. A good executive knows how to delegate and AVOID getting too much in the weeds (Reagan being a classic illustration). Some might read the NYT piece to imply that Romney is closer to Carter than Reagan in terms of the big picture/vision vs. details aspect of running the country.
In short, some undecideds might read this piece and conclude Romney is less fit to be president than they might have presumed. Don’t know whether that was the reporters’ intent.
He looks just like his dad.
