A number of miners in southern West Virginia employed by Mechel-Bluestone have received news this week not to come back to work until further notice, WVVA News has learned.
A miner at one of the affected mines -- Double Bonus Mine on Pinnacle Creek Road in Pineville -- tells WVVA News that the miners there were told Thursday the mine was being idled until further notice.
The miner says the affected workers were told they could file for low-earning unemployment and that a timetable for return was uncertain.
At least four other underground and surface mines in the area were said to be affected, including Frontier Mine in Coal Mountain, and Paycar Mine in Kimball.
Despite multiple attempts by WVVA News -- both by phone and in person -- Mechel-Bluestone officials could not be reached for comment.
Typically, businesses that conduct layoffs must file what is called a 'warn notice' to Workforce West Virginia, so they are prepared to assist the affected workers. However, when filing for low-earning unemployment, a warn notice is not necessary.
Mechel is a Russian-based coal and steel producer, founded in 2003 according to the company's website.
Mechel-Bluestone is headquartered in Beckley.
Since Ted Kennedy has been brought up, I’d like to extend my congratulations to him, he’s been sober for a little over 3 years now.
It would be great to see rat-bastard Manchin and pig-face Tomblin ride 0bama's coattails straight to Hell.
Holly, you win the post of the week award!!! This is priceless...

“Since Ted Kennedy has been brought up, Id like to extend my congratulations to him, hes been sober for a little over 3 years now.
But, Ted is still way behind Mary Jo in the “below the surface” competition.
Think Rick Boucher........ gone.
The Obama ads from the East Tennessee TV stations broadcasting into SW Virginia have about ceased. The pro coal ads are hitting very hard. Obama has written off SW Va.
Yeah, and I also don’t think that coal-hating commie Flaccavento is making any headway against Morgan Griffith either.
Yet, they will no doubt vote for Obama, the idiot that stated that he wanted to shut down all coal power plants and force energy prices skyhigh.
We see evidence directly contrary to your assertion. This time, it is their very way of life and personal well-being that has been attacked by Obama’s left-wing policies. Miners are coming in to our Republican headquarters and they are worried to death and about to vote for the party (GOP) that they feel deep down will stand by them. The union loyalty of the past century is cracking.
Good! My family in PA are miners and the dummies cord Zero. I souls be thrilled if PA finally went solid red.
