Alan, the guy who tried to make it a major issue whether Sarah Palin was a virgin on her wedding night and said that Rick Santorum and his family took their dead son’s body home to “play with it” is, shall we say, a less than optimal messenger on this.
But he’s also completely right.
The damage was done, though, when Obama decided some ill-educated actress should be the co-chair of his campaign. It would be harder to figure out a way to say more clearly that he’s completely unserious.

As for whether it’s awkward, think of it this way:
If they can put politics aside for a day or two, no problem.
