The upstate economy took another significant blow today as General Motors announced it will close its fuel cell plant in Honeoye Falls, just south of Rochester.
The decision means the 220 salaried employees who worked in the research and development facility wont be employed in the area. The company said most of the employees will be offered the opportunity to transfer to the Global Powertrain Engineering Headquarters in Pontiac, Mich., the Democrat and Chronicle reports.
This decision has significant business advantages for the company, said Kim Carpenter, GM spokeswoman.
For example, it will enable GM to capitalize on synergies with the rest of the powertrain and vehicle organizations. The majority of the GM employees will be offered the option to relocate in Michigan.

This is a well buried item in the local liberal news; however I found out about it from a NEW CO-WORKER who is a TOTAL SCREAMING GREENIE LIB. Her husband works for the DEC (EPA's biological extrusion) and she has worked in Planning and Mapping for various gov't entities as well. She mentioned this in a casual conversation about house hunting in the Honeoye area. I couldn't resist and said "so I thought GM was ALIVE?!" She responded with nervous laughter!
Which will result in the unemployment numbers dropping to a low of 7.5% for October /s
Can you imagine the wave of layoff notices at green enterprises scheduled to go out on Wednesday, November 7, 2012?
Kinda like an offer to go to prison, complete with bars on the doors and windows, and everyone outside carrying guns.
“This decision has significant business advantages for the company, said Kim Carpenter, GM spokeswoman.”
Axeing 220 employees is a business advantage. Sounds like the White House is writing their press releases.
What a crock!. They have internet and telephone, and with that you can have all the synergy you need.
The subsidy must have run out.
Well, at least they aren’t moving this to China—yet.
So... was this decision based on the realization that hydrogen fuel-cell batteries can never generate power, but only store it? That the hype about fuel cells was never true?
ROFl, don't you just love irony? lol. They can transfer to MICHIGAN?? rofl
AbolishCSEU~ :”.. I couldn’t resist and said “so I thought GM was ALIVE?! ... “
This is a case of GM cutting Research & Developement for the sake of preserving manufacturing ( think: union )jobs.
I thought Biden said last week in the Vice Presidential debate that : “ Obama saved the automotive industry “
Maybe he meant .. union jobs ?
“Can you imagine the wave of layoff notices at green enterprises scheduled to go out on Wednesday, November 7, 2012?”
OK, true, but seriously, how can 250-500 layoffs affect the economy??
How far is this closed plant from Hofstra University, the site of tonight’s town hall show? When BO whines about Bain closing some businesses, Romney should point out that even Government Motors closes unsustainable businesses, such as this one, Many other “green” companies have failed after receiving huge government subsidies.
However, the BIG difference is that when Bain does it, it loses private money. When the government does it, it is losing the taxpayers’ money.
“We have increased your employment from 40 hours a week to 0! Glory to the party!”
...GM to capitalize on synergies...
Of course, one must capitalize on synergies at any price...
250-500 here...250-500 there...soon you have quite a few people laid-off or fired.
More importantly, it appears that the nobamites have weirdly “saved” GM.
The plant is almost 350 miles from the debate. Hempstead is on Long Island and the plant is near the great lake Ontario
