This Nov. 6, Michigan voters will have the opportunity to decide on a number of proposals on the statewide ballot including Proposal 5, which is commonly referred to as the 2/3 Amendment.
Michigan taxpayers should vote yes on Proposal 5 to make it more difficult for politicians in Lansing to take away their hard-earned money through tax increases. It is time for us to demand more accountability from our elected officials. The 2/3 Amendment does that.
The 2/3 Amendment isnt complicated. It requires a two-thirds vote of the Michigan House and Senate to increase or create new taxes. If legislators cant get reach consensus to pass a tax increase they believe is necessary through the legislature, they can place it on the next November election ballot with a simple majority vote.
This gives lawmakers and special interest groups the chance to make their case to the taxpayers who ultimately foot the bill on the necessity of the tax increase over some other type of solution or reform.
Youll hear our opposition call the 2/3 Amendment an anti-tax initiative. It is not anti-tax. The 2/3 Amendment is pro-taxpayer.
The 2/3 Amendment will require our elected leaders to achieve true bipartisan consensus before they increase taxes on Michigan families and businesses. The 2/3 Amendment will make reform the first priority in Lansing, and tax increases the last resort. This is not only good public policy. It is good for Michigan.
Taxpayer protections such as the 2/3 Amendment are not groundbreaking. The Michigan Constitution already includes important taxpayer protections such as the Headlee Amendment and Proposal A, and 15 other states already have similar requirements for tax increases.

I'm voting Yes on 1 and 5, and no on the rest.
I am only voting yes on #1. 2,3,4 are for unions, NO!! 5 and 6 sound good, but it can and probably will come back to bite us in the butt, so a no vote on them. Be careful of what you wish for or should I say vote for.
Go Tigers
Verlander on the mound tomorrow.
That's an easy one for Kalifornia. The two-thirds vote maybe the only thing that has forestalled its eventual fall into the ocean. The problem isn't revenues, its spending.
No thank you, hands off my constitution to all.
Be careful what you wish for. I anticipate some legislators will propose lots of tax increases knowing full well they will end up as ballot measures. Ballot measures relieve them of responsibility and move us closer to democracy, a dangerous trend.
“Youll hear our opposition call the 2/3 Amendment an anti-tax initiative.”
As if that is a bad thing....
I agree with you - something just smells about this proposal — I look at how Michigan retains two of the worse Senators and Jennifer Granholm for 8 years. So, bad things can happen....law of unintended consequences. This is not a Democracy and we don’t ever want it to be.
