I seriously doubt that Spector would want to lie in state. He wasn’t the most religious Jew. But even reasonably secular Jews keep fast to the tradition of being buried as soon as possible.

Anyone know the religious affiliation or dis-inclination of the deceased Senator? He was Jewish and, at least at one time (back in the 1970s), reasonably observant. For many years (though I don't know about recently) he was a member of an Orthodox Sephardic synagogue in Philadelphia, where he had his son bar mitzvahed.

Arlen Specter (left) was the "author" of the "magic bullet."

Yes, I'm glad you pointed that out. Spector was an attorney working with the Warren Commission which investigated and issued the official report on the assassination of JFK.

His "magic bullet" (i.e., single bullet) theory was adopted by the commission and became the federal government's position for many years, enabling the conclusion that Lee Harvey Oswald acted as a lone assassin.

In retrospect, this was probably false, and perhaps deliberately so. A later congressional committee reinvestigated the JFK assassination and, IIRC, stated that, more than likely, there were at least three shots fired and least a second gunman involved.

Nonetheless, Spector's notoriety in his capacity with the Warren Commission helped to launch his political career.

Without the “magic bullet” the Warren commission would have been forced to conclude a conspiracy, and inevitably traced it to Cuba, that would have forced Congress to recognize it as an Act of War. US Declares war on Cuba, Soviet Union bound by treaty and common goals to enter on the side of Cuba, etc.

I’ll go with a “magic bullet” and an embargo of Cuba to this very day over global nuclear war.

Just the musings of an old tired FReeper, YMMV...

You were a RINO, but at least you helped usher in Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court.
Yes, his one saving grace. But ever since the time he helped Ira Einhorn jump bail and live the good life in France, I've always had a creepy feeling about this guy, tosay the least. I won't dance on his grave, but I won't mourn his passing either

He was the one who came up with the absurd JFK “Magic Bullet” Theory from the Warren Commission. His life was an example of why politicians should be allowed to serve no more than 2-3 terms in the Senate or House. RIP Arlen.

The “magic bullet” never made any sense, but getting to the bottom of what happened is *not* what commissions of that kind are there to do. :’)

Unfortunate this mans theory was adopted. You never knew what the truth was with him.

Arlen Specter was Ira Einhorn’s attorney.

Ira Einhorn was the 60’s era radical, communist, terrorist murderer who killed his coed girlfriend, and mummified her in a closet.

Yep. THAT Ira Einhorn.

Oh, yeah. Kirk. He was pushed by the “We just want a majority! We just want a majority!” crowd. That’s how we ended up with odious men like Specter again and again. Specter should have been gone in 2004 but the worthless establishment and president Bush supported him and twisted Santorum’s arm to support him. Good riddance!

My sincere condolences to his family and friends. No matter how I feel about him and what he did in life, it is still a tragedy to those who loved them and they deserve sympathy at a time like this.

Sphincter was reelected by unions, dems and those who voted Republican No Matter What. Those republicans who wanted to get rid of him were outgunned by the primary system and the PA RC.

Wow. I didn’t know about this story. After reading it, I’m ashamed to say that I am a lawyer (though I can’t practice here).

In any case, prayers to Mr. Specter’s family—and to Ms. Maddux’s family. What a horrible crime.

Well, these musings are very insightful. :)

I’m sad to see Specter go. Two personal stories about him:

1. I was at an event with him once and we were having pictures taken. He told me to take my name tag off for the picture. That’s something I never forgot (and its good advice too).

2. I was taking a cab in Philly once and Specter was running for re-election (the last time he ran as a Republican) so we talked about him. The cab driver talked about how his mother got caught up in the corrupt Philly magistrate system in the 1960s. She wrote Specter, who was DA at the time, a letter about what happened to her and how unfair it was. She didn’t think anything would come of it but Specter actually came to her house and spent an hour talking to her about the problems with the system. He said he was trying to fight it and wanted her to know that. There are a lot of other stories like that from his early days.

I know a lot of people dislike him but you have to remember that he is a throw back to the old Republican Party. It was not always anti-abortion and it was fairly moderate in the Northeast. That doesn’t mean those positions are right but its not like he was imposing some alien positions on the GOP. And as others mentioned, he did some good things for the GOP like leading the fight for Clarence Thomas.
