October 12, 2012|By David Zurawik | The Baltimore Sun Two weeks ago, the conventional wisdom was that televised presidential debates werent going to matter much this year.
Then a TV debate took place in Denver on Oct. 3, and we are still talking about Big Bird being threatened, moderator Jim Lehrer getting steamrolled, President Barack Obama under-performing and the polls flipping from done deal to game on overnight.

I was honored and happy and all of those things when they asked me, CNNs chief political correspondent said in an interview last week. But I did not think, And Im a woman. Because its not like you wake up in the morning and think, Im a man. It just is what you are, and you live your life.
But, she adds, I came to understand that it does matter in a way that I didnt see at first. And I came to understand that through my emails, through folks who approached me in the grocery store, on the street, at the conventions, at the debates folks who would hug me, young women, old women, their husbands, their sons, their fiancees or whoever who would say, Were so excited a womans going to do this.
Crowley says she does not play down the optics of this any more now that she sees the larger symbolic import of standing on that stage Tuesday night.
It matters to minorities that you can see someone doing something you want to do and, hopefully, succeeding at it, she explains. It helps if you are a young woman to be able to look up on that stage and say, Wow, a females doing this. I can do this, too.

"Crowley's sister Jocelyn is an associate professor at Rutgers University and Jocelyn is married to Fox News Channel contributor Alan Colmes."
We aren’t going to get Rush although did Olberman ever do a debate?
I think our best shot would be Greta, O’Reilly or maybe Carl Cameron.
GOP idiots need to hold out next time to have at least one of those people do one debate.
“They had a lib moderate the first debate. A conservative should moderate the second. Its only fair. Equal time.”
I nominate Mark Levin.
I know.
This is the problem with a liberal moderator, she will go heavy on the abortion issue, and other women's issues and totally ignore Obama's record of failures.
She doesn't have to be unbiased in her moderating, it's all done in the selection of topics to be discussed and in the order and time given to each one.
All Romney has to do to gain favor and control over Crowley is to bring out a box of bon-bons when the debate begins.
Er, Ms. Crowly could you move a little to one side or the other, we’re having a hard time seeing the candidates.
I have never understood this.
I like listening to men talk. I like how they think. Throw the sexes together and it becomes a social occasion - something different than serious discussion.
I want more men!
I hope these moderators aren't doing this for free - the DNC should be paying them with more than insider tips.
They're much vaunted 'tolerance' doesn't extend beyond their members. It would be as if we stuck our noses in the air and were so proud we were 'tolerant' of conservative Christians - or gun owners. They'd be a joke if they were smart enough to see themselves as the rest of us see them.
“Mitt has to be prepared to debate both Hussein and Crowley”
Not to mention the questioners from the audience who have been hand-picked by Crowley, et al. It’s gonna be so fixed. It’s like Brent Bozell said on Hannity last night, that he has no sympathy for the GOP since they just go along and never even attempt to have fair debates.
“I didn’t know that Colmes was married to a Republican.”
Jocelyn Crowley is not a Republican; she’s a flaming lib. I have to assume that Monica goes to Stuart Anderson for Thanksgiving dinner. Could you imagine sharing a meal with Colmes.
How exactly are women “minorities” again? No matter how rare white Christian heterosexual males get in the future, I’m sure they’re never going to be called “minorities.”
for my optics I prefer Poppy Harlow:
