October 12, 2012|By David Zurawik | The Baltimore Sun Two weeks ago, the conventional wisdom was that televised presidential debates werent going to matter much this year.
Then a TV debate took place in Denver on Oct. 3, and we are still talking about Big Bird being threatened, moderator Jim Lehrer getting steamrolled, President Barack Obama under-performing and the polls flipping from done deal to game on overnight.

I was honored and happy and all of those things when they asked me, CNNs chief political correspondent said in an interview last week. But I did not think, And Im a woman. Because its not like you wake up in the morning and think, Im a man. It just is what you are, and you live your life.
But, she adds, I came to understand that it does matter in a way that I didnt see at first. And I came to understand that through my emails, through folks who approached me in the grocery store, on the street, at the conventions, at the debates folks who would hug me, young women, old women, their husbands, their sons, their fiancees or whoever who would say, Were so excited a womans going to do this.
Crowley says she does not play down the optics of this any more now that she sees the larger symbolic import of standing on that stage Tuesday night.
It matters to minorities that you can see someone doing something you want to do and, hopefully, succeeding at it, she explains. It helps if you are a young woman to be able to look up on that stage and say, Wow, a females doing this. I can do this, too.

No where does she talk about a commitment to fairness or objectivity. The qestion selections and follow-ups will all favor O. “Where’s the specifics of your tax plan, Gov. Romney.” Meanwhile, she’ll let O skate on his record of failure and complete lack of any plan to grow the economy
Candy Crowley?? What’s the matter...was Bill Ayers unavailable?
Wide angle optics...
“I nominate Rush Limbaugh.”
Seconded. And when the libs fail to show up, Romney can debate an empty chair.
I was thinking the same thing. This is not at all new to have a woman moderating a debate. I bet they were applauding that a not so pretty woman would be allowed to have center stage for so long.
Indeed! It is the Mary Matalin paradox.
WOW!! I didn't know that Colmes was married to a Republican. (no Dems are hotties like this) I don't know how she can stand him, which calls into question just how much brain she has. He reminds me of a mule eating saw briars.
Rush would be good, but my personal pick would be Mark Levin.
Rush would be good, but my personal pick would be Mark Levin.
For the next two debates, even....
Typically stupid.
“quite an accomplished brain.”
Not if she married colmes.
How is that corpse get HER to marry him????
How did that corpse get HER to marry him????
Therefore, Monica Crowley is Colmes' sister-in-law.
Must be a fun time at Thanksgiving dinners.
BTW, in my humble opinion, Monica Crowley is the most informed, most quick-witted, most gutsy and most articulate conservative counter-puncher on TV as well as being very attractive.
Well, Monica, as they say, you can pick your pew, but you can't pick your relatives.

These “debates” are not debates at all, and the idea that a) they have some kind of official status and b) that they should be run by Leftists is absurd.
She renamed herself Candy after her favorite food.
If the left insists on doing this, then the right should insist on having Rush Limbaugh or Mark Levin moderate a debate. That would be great entertainment!
Will she have any questions about the Mooch’s calorie nazi policies?
