WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States must look past the violence and extremism that has erupted after the "Arab Spring" revolutions and boost support for the region's young democracies to forge long-term security, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Friday.
Clinton, seeking to reinforce the Obama administration's Middle East policy following a wave of anti-American violence and last month's deadly attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi, Libya, said Washington cannot be deterred by "the violent acts of a small number of extremists."
"We recognize that these transitions are not America's to manage, and certainly not ours to win or lose," Clinton said in a speech to the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington think tank.
"But we have to stand with those who are working every day to strengthen democratic institutions, defend universal rights, and drive inclusive economic growth. That will produce more capable partners and more durable security over the long term."
Middle East unrest has become fodder for the U.S. presidential campaign, where Republican candidate Mitt Romney has sought to portray President Barack Obama as an ineffectual leader who has left the United States vulnerable at a time of international crisis.
Romney and other Republicans have focused on the September 11 Benghazi attack, which killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans, accusing the Obama administration of security and intelligence lapses in what officials now describe as a terrorist attack.
Clinton noted that the Benghazi incident was the subject of an official probe and vowed the United States would track down those responsible for the attack.
But she stressed that U.S. diplomats must engage with an uncertain and dangerous world if they are to promote and protect U.S. interests. " .. Our people cannot live in bunkers and do their jobs," she said.

I think Wright has always been in it for the money. He has always been looking out for number one and it has paid off. They all make me sick.
I really, really wish America could just go ahead and divide into two separate countries. Red States of America and Blue States of America. This country is so divided that I don’t see us ever coming together again in any meaningful way. I certainly have no intention of bowing under Obama or any other dictator. Just give them their own communist country and they can leave the rest of us the hell alone!
It would be three countries. The Left Coast and the North east, and the middle.
That is, there would be East Blueland and West Blueland. With America in the middle.
The solution is simple. East and West Blueland can just be purged from the nation. It is pretty much what Robert Heinlein predicted
Reenacting the day Vince Foster visited her office?
She could use a bath as well.
I believe that’s what they intend to do eventually, iow, Balkanize the country like they did to Yugoslavia. Look at how they’ve let California go to the dogs, that wasn’t an accident. It wasn’t an accident to leave the border open either, nor an accident that our schools have been dumbed down from what was our history... They’ve gotten the rights to their oil, piplelines, water, minerals, etc., in the Balkanized countries, and many other countries, in fact, they started here a couple of decades ago.
Yes. . .read somewhere; (been traveling this weekend; and too late/tired to look for this; but perhaps even posted. . .)ANYway; seems Turkey is taking an interest in America's 'Native American community' - ostensibly because they share a common DNA root or somesuch; (no doubt, far more 'practical' motivations here) per their own Turkish Islamic outreach agendas.
So we not only have to concern ourselves with our prisons as 'breeding grounds' for Islamism; but now they are taking their recruitment to the Reservations - and more.
Add to that the mega mosques' - and every mosque, for that matter - as 'Trojan horses' in the making; and then, the whose 'who' of the Muslim Brotherhood working inside our Goverment/White House; and one simply has to 'catch ones' breath'. . .at least; am trying to catch mine.
Believe he is now being 'advised' - among others - by John Bolton. If true; then he is probably now, more informed; as to the truth of the matter.
