House ethics panel opens investigation of Democratic Rep. Reyes

The House Ethics Committee announced on Friday that it is investigating allegations against Rep. Silvestre Reyes (D-Texas).

The secretive panel stated that after six weeks of investigating the lawmaker, it was moving to continue its probe until Nov. 28, 2012.

The Ethics committee did not specify the nature of the alleged violations of House rules that it is probing in the case, but stressed that the extension of its investigation did not indicate that Reyes was guilty.

The outside Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE) board referred the case to the Ethics panel on Aug. 30.

Reyes lost his Democratic primary race earlier this year to former El Paso councilman Beto O’Rourke amid allegations from the Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) watchdog group that he used campaign contributions to reimburse himself, his niece, his brother, and his sister-in-law more than $400,000 in the 2008 and 2010 elections.

Reyes’ office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Rep. Silvestre Reyes (D-Texas), I knew I’d seen that name before! He was tied in with John Murtha and the PMA money laundering schemes. Big time pay-to-play guy right out of the Murtha playbook!

Thanks, Smooth. I thought the name sounded a little familiar but no way did I connect him with Murtha and PMA.

When I read the amount ($400K) I thought that was huge for only a couple of elections. Seems he may have learned some tricks from Murtha but isn't near as slippery as Murtha, Reyes got caught.

I bet he doesn’t belong to the Black Congressional caucus.
It also doesn’t help that he lost his primary and the Dems don’t need him next year.

If he were a CBC member there would be no problem, they have been investigating Maxine Waters for about 4 years now with no end in sight.

The ethics committee is a bad joke.

Actually Reyes has been a member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and has served as chairman.

I doubt the Ethics Committee will nail him because he's on his way out but they should if he stole campaign funds, he should also be criminally prosecuted if that's the case.

The committee finally decided on Maxine and found she violated no rules, that is definitely a joke.

Nancy Pelosi’s buddy. Chairman of the Intelligence Committee, Nancy? I always wanted to know if we the taxpayers paid the thousands of dollars ransom when his wife’s relative was allegedly kidnapped in Mexico. I have no idea if the guy who beat him in the primary will be an improvement. He wants to legalize drugs. I wish for a miracle and that would be the Republican, who is female , will win in an 80% Democrat town.

Is this the same “House Ethics Committee” that went after Maxine Waters? We all saw how well that worked out. She wiped the floor up with them and scared them all to death with her deck of race cards. This guy will do the same thing. LOL!

Yep, this was the final committee for Maxine, she strung that farce out so long she went through a couple of them.

Yeah, a Pelosi crony. He represented El Paso, IIRC.

I hadn’t heard about Maxines vindication, but it doesn’t surprise me.

As you say the ethics committee is a joke.
