Nor is getting all hung-up over a phrase without looking at the context in which it was said.
The man was trying to make a specific and scientific point on a very explosive subject, and IMHO, he never said anything he should have apologized for.
Everyone fell into the media trap of word-baiting. They got that ‘legitimate’ rape’ soundbite stuck in their heads and just kept playing it to themselves - over and over.... and over.
I was really disappointed in FReeper land. As a group, I thought we had better cognitive reasoning abilities than that.
I am relatively new here, and was quite surprised. The reaction over Akin sure did not jibe with the super large conservative base of FReepers here. There have been worse comments from much more liberal GOP, and never the outcry like over Akin

jumping on the bandwagon is the favorite sport on Free Republic. Many never get off and ride into intellectual oblivion
I agree with you Seminole....very disappointing. The rope a dope dead media sure has gotten into some Freepers minds. This display of mindlessness reflects the pitiful Republican Party. I notice that the electorate mix has Independents growing and the Drats/Rrats are not.
The Akin affair has certainly been an educational repeat of the Scwarzenegger-McClintock days.
The number of FReepers who will jettison a genuine conservative for an empty suit with an (R) after their name is surprising.
