The picture is supposed to be a cottonmouth. If I remember right, cottonmouths are black puff adders, also called water moccasins. I think, but am not sure, that is a picture of a copperhead, which hangs out under fallen timber I want to walk over.

Sorry, the eastern cottonmouth does have that banded pattern. Not yet familiar with the regional variations.
