(CNSNews.com) In marking the one year anniversary of Lets Move! in Indian Country, First Lady Michelle Obama praised the work done by Native American and Alaskan American communities in fighting childhood obestiy by, among other things, adding "traditional foods like buffalo meat into school lunches."
A year ago, Mrs. Obama joined Native American children in the White House garden to launch Lets Move in Indian Country by planting the three sisters--corn, beans and squash.
This is such an important issue, Mrs. Obama said in the video marking the one-year anniversary of the program. We know that children in American Indian and Alaskan Native communities experience higher rates of obesity.
We know theyre more likely to develop related diseases like Type II diabetes than the national averages, Mrs. Obama said.
But we also know that there are so many people in these communities who want to make a difference for the health of their kids, Mrs. Obama said. And thats what has defined Lets Move! in Indian Country in our first year.
Weve seen tribal nations develop food policy councils to examine the food habits of their communities, Mrs. Obama said. Schools have reintroduced Lacrosse programs. Native businesses are adding healthy, traditional foods like buffalo meat into school lunches.
The Department of Interior states the goals of the Lets Move! in Indian Country as: Creating a healthy start in life; developing healthy learning; communities increasing physical activities; and increasing access to affordable, healthy and traditional foods
Let's Move! in Indian Country is a comprehensive initiative dedicated to solving the problem of obesity within a generation, so that children born today will grow up healthier and able to pursue their dreams, the Department of Interior website states. This is an ambitious goal. But with your help, we can do it."
Mrs. Obama said there is more left to do. "And that's where all of you come in," she said. "We need your help to get more schools serving healthy foods and finding new ways to get kids to get active."
Funny thing... (and I’m 1/8 Cherokee, so I get to dog on us Indians :) )...
One of my accounts is in Chinle, AZ. On the way there, not too far from Ganado is a McDonald’s. I’ve stopped there on the long drive to my account. They have various paintings depicting Indian life on the walls.
One of the paintings shows a tribe on horseback driving an entire herd of buffalo off a cliff.
I really had to suppress laughter! The noble native murdering an entire herd? No way could they “use all parts of the buffalo” and not waste.
Sorry, this thread simply brought that memory back :)
” Animal fat is not bad for you and doesnt make you fat.”
Shut yo mou!!
Animal fat is loaded with carbs.... no no I mean fat, no I.....
The three sisters are survival food - they will not slim you down.
Skinny arms are not toned, they are just skinny.
She has skinny arms and bird legs, and round, well that other part.
She in not the worst first lady, because she is no lady.
She is the worst of her kind whatever that is.
Oh, sure, as if the average Native American is out with bow and arrow sneaking up on a free roaming buffalo herd. Yo, Moochelle, that’s racist! Ground buffalo is $10/lb and she’s going to serve that on the “free” lunch program.
Where I grew up in SE North Dakota, there was a gun club (both whites and Indians among the membership) which had a small buffalo ranch and prepared a fundraiser for the public once a year with a bison barbecue. For a little extra, you could come early and see the cowboys and Indians hunt the designated buffalo in traditional costume. This included field dressing and was not a spectacle for the faint of heart.
The problem with Buffalo and with Bambi is that has very little fat and small taste.
Aren’t buffalo sacred to some in “Indian Country”?
Someone ask Mrs. Obama if she advocates eating those native American meals.
I agree. This sounds really, really stereotypical. What about Pow Wow Chow, Michelle? Should that be on the menu? Your materials sound pretty un-PC to me.
She should concern herself with real problems...like alcoholism among native-Americans. She wouldn’t dare. She’s not really all that concerned about her fellow ‘man’.
“She should concern herself with real problems...like alcoholism among native-Americans.”
Make a real difference Mrs. O and talk about the horrors and expense of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome...
I was schooled at the feet of an grizzled old Sioux, obviously not old enough to remember personally, but old enough to have heard the story from a grandfather.
He showed me one of the tribal winter counts, the traditional method of tribal history recording where one picture represented the passage of one year and the most important event. Once such picture represented the cliff method of hunting buffalo, dating from the 1840's.
The old Sioux told me that the tribal elders very much frowned on this method of hunting as they had seen herds come and go due to natural cycles. The young wouldn't listen because they believed the buffalo would always be plentiful like they were at that time. Sort of like the Obama morons who think the rich have an unlimited supply of wealth to tax for their own benefit.
Buffalo meat is extremely greasy at the hump part especially.
This is like Ranger/Michael Phelps food, and it’s not for sedentary lifestyle, it will litteraly kill you so energetic it is. I had some while in the army with the Rangers for a week and I had to stop because I blacked out for bad circulation and heart stress during an exercise.
These people are complete crass oportunist political pseudo-intellectuals. Their minds are completely whored from reality.
Just say no to boob belted buffaloing.
In a perverted kind of a way we will miss Big Moo when she is gone.
Just the white ones. Can you imagine Moochelle’s face if she knew white buffalo were sacred above the brown ones?
How can we miss her if she won't go away?
“Can you imagine Moochelles face if she knew white buffalo were sacred above the brown ones?”
Scandalous!
(Thinks for straightening that out for me.)
OMG...this “nanny” doctrine of the Obama Administration is so offensive. It is Big Brother...Big Mama...and now Big Bird who are telling us what to do, how to live, what to eat, who we should help, etc. When do they focus on the job of protecting us from our enemies, keeping us secure, assuring economic stability, providing an environment for business to flourish and jobs to increase? Oh, yeah...Ma and Pa Obama said they haven’t been able to do that because...(insert the litany of excuses). They sound more like whining children than the children they are supposed to be protecting.
