How family lore shapes character

When Oklahoma was made a state in 1907, barely four decades before Warren was born there, it incorporated the so-called Indian Territory that culmination of the multiple betrayals of Native Americans, an end of the trail of tears. The Cherokee people, in particular, paid the price of the forced relocation across thousands of miles, with thousands dead. More than in the rest of America, ghosts of the Indian wars abound in Oklahoma. Warrens family, tracing itself to those Cherokees, was haunted by them. That the anti-Indian prejudice directed at her parents, like some bloodlines themselves, is impossible to document only underscores its viciousness. Bigotry thrives on innuendo.
For us, the point is that Warren was marked early on by visceral identification with dispossessed victims. Perhaps not coincidentally, her professional life has been defined by an acute sense of wrongs inflicted upon whole classes of people, especially those confronting bankruptcy. Character, Warren said in last weeks debate, is how you live your life.

Bump for later, this looks like it could be interesting.
As luck would have it, I watched Oklahoma today. I love Oklahoma, it’s really my fave R & H musical, but it really has a lot of rather dark elements.
I also love OK, a great movie and musical, made great by the dark elements.
I don’t recall all that many dark elements except for Judd Fry.
” That the anti-Indian prejudice directed at her parents, like some bloodlines themselves, is impossible to document only underscores its viciousness.”
Yes, the fact that my angst and internalized oppression is fabricated make them that much more tragic, dontcha think? .........Waahh, waaahh,....sniff, sniff, blubber. Should I bite my knuckle, or put the back of my hand to my forehead? Maybe an attack of the vapors. Yeah, that sounds romantically tragic, I think. A good case of the vapors, that’s the ticket!
Spin, spin, spin. What a pile of steaming BS! The liberals just can’t admit their champion fraudulently gamed the ethnic affirmative action spoils system.
“OK, a great movie and musical”
I love Shirley Jones in that movie. I think she is just perfect a Laurey, and Laurey has to be perfect.
So... it doesn’t matter if she really has Indian ancestry as long as her parents thought so?
James Carroll, you have got to be kidding me. You libs can rationalize anything.
James Carroll needs to get back to his real passion: maligning the Catholic Church, starting with the New Testament writers. He’s made a fortune at it.
“The anti-Indian prejudice......is impossible to document.” I guess they have to write something to try and protect her.
Maybe we could start a post about GREAT MOMENTS IN AMERICAN HISTORY THAT PALEFACE LIZZY WARREN MIGHT HAVE BEEN AT EXCEPT SHE WASN’T.
And there was Paleface Lizzy, in the boat with General Washinton, rowing hard to get to the other side except......she really wasn’t.
Paleface Lizzy Warren was there with Wilbur and Orville Wright testing their new flying machine......except ......she really wasn’t.
That is true at a family level and at a National level.
I directed a production of the stage show many years ago. One of my favorite moments was when an actor picked up the fake knife that Curly uses to accidentally kill Jud and, as he walked off stage, abesnt-mindedly pushed the blade back and forth into the hilt. Fortunately, it was only a rehearsal.
I agree one million percent. She was perfect, and so was Gordon Macrae. I saw video of a London production with Hugh Jackman as a breathtaking Curly, but the Laurey wasn’t so hot, though she was a terrific dancer, the first Laurey do do both the singing and the dancing. She just wasn’t pretty enough, and they dressed her down to be a tomboy.
I know the Cherokee were relocated to Oklahoma but it’s my understanding that Oklahoma had always been the home range of the Comanche, who btw are the second largest Indian tribe, were the most feared and war-like and were the last Indians to ‘’walk the white mans road’’, i.e move to reservations.
Lizzie Borden took an AXE. Lizzy Warren took a hatchet.
I saw that actress do that role in NYC, she was not that good, and sorry to be nit-picky but she’s a brunette, I think Laurey needs to be blonde.
The fellow who played Jud was EXCELLENT, to me he was the best in the show. That’s a hard part to play, I’ve always thought, even from when we did a very abbreviated version of the show in elementary school.
I’ve also watched some of the videos with Hugh Jackman - I never realized it was that same London production, I wish he’d come across the pond to play Curley!
I think he did play Curley in the Broadway production.
LOL!!
