Mitt Romney will call for an escalation of the conflict in Syria by arming rebels with the heavy weapons needed to confront president Bashar al-Assad's tanks, helicopters and fighter jets.
Romney is to make the proposal on Monday in what his campaign team has billed as a major foreign policy speech in Lexington, Virginia.
In extracts published in advance, he opened up the prospect, if he becomes president, of a US-Iranian proxy war being fought in Syria.
"Iran is sending arms to Assad because they know his downfall would be a strategic defeat for them. We should be working no less vigorously with our international partners to support the many Syrians who would deliver that defeat to Iran rather than sitting on the sidelines," he said.
The proposal would mark a significant shift from Barack Obama's administration's policy of trying to keep the conflict a low-intensity one amid fears it might turn into a regional war. Obama is putting pressure on Saudi Arabia and Qatar, the main backers of the rebels, to restrict the supply of weapons to small arms.
The Republican presidential candidate has made several attempts at establishing his credentials to be commander-in-chief but those speeches made little impact. Against the background of his win over Obama in last week's debate, the Romney campaign team is hoping this speech will be better received.
The speech is aimed at countering critics who say he has not had much to say so far about foreign policy and given little indication of the lines he would pursue as president.

Dangerous too. There is lots of evidence that Obama’s state department, including Susan Rice and his Arabist Robert Brennan, contributed to the series of events to put the Muslim Brotherhood in charge. Remember Hillary's closest aid worked for CAIR and ISNA, and her parents are founders of the Muslim Brotherhood. Remember that Barack’s patron, according to Percy Sutton, Malcolm X's and Louis Farrakhan's, and one of many Muslim Brotherhood attorneys, is Alwaleed bin-Talal. He supported his lawyer, Khalid al-Mansour, in buying Obama’s entry to Harvard Law (with a twenty million dollar donation and the largest division of Harvard Divinity School, the Alwaleed bin-Talal Center for Islamic Studies. Supporting the rebels in Syria is supporting the Muslim Brotherhood. We already do that, and it is a death-filled policy which has licensed the killing of Christians, Alawites, Druz, and of course, Jews.
Also good to keep the source in mind. Reuters is hardly a trustworthy news source and can probably be presumed to take whatever tidbits that might keep the Marxist in office out of context.
Sorry for confusing Reuters with The Guardian. The Guardian is even more left wing, so the caution remains.
Good Lord, I think this is a mistake. We never know whose side anyone is on over there, and the “rebels” we back always turn on us. Wanna remind people of GWB’s two wars? Go ahead - they are sick of war. Mistake to say he would escalate war.
Obviously knocking over Syria gives Iran even more breathing room to build their nukes.
Not interesting.. horrifying. No good comes from getting mired in there. And the Syrian “rebels” are bloodthirsty jihadis who will be exponentially worse than what is in power there.
No, Mitt. Don`t go there.
The hard leftist rag The Guardian. I always get my news about Romney or our “guys” from them. How about you? /sarc
Romney should stop listening to John McCain for foreign policy advice. If this is true. The Guardian... it’s a liberal paper. I’ll wait for more sources.
Precisely the reason I added the caveat ‘if true’ to my initial post. I also commented on the overt anti-Romney spin of the article in post 3, above.
However, some sections of this purport to be direct quotes from Romney’s speech. These comments (again: ‘if true’) are certainly cause for concern. If you have any info on this from a different - or more reliable - news source, I’d be interested in reading it.
Yeah, great idea, so that after they’re finished with Assad, then they can turn those weapons on Americans. Brilliant!
You do realize that Romney has not said this yet.
This article says “would”, not Romney “said”.
This is the guardiam, I think I will wait until Romney actually says something.
If mitt does this, he will give it to Obama.
I’ll be mad as hell at him.
The national interests of the United States would not be advanced by getting involved in a conflict between the Iranian-backed government and the Muslim Brotherhood backed rebels. We should stay out and get popcorn.
When I first read the article, I thought of McCain. The man is a lunatic. Listening to McLame, will put Obama in for a second term.
Not our problem nor our responsibility.
I would stay out of it. Humanitarian aid only and only after the shooting stops. Furthermore, drop the aid from the air. No personnel for the savages to kidnap.
???
I think Al Qaeda is arming them well enough
Well, I would arm them too, but not to win. Just to keep destroying Syria.
I would take the same approach throughout the entire muslim world.
I felt sick to my stomach reading this article.
It reminded me why I voted in 2000 primaries for W rather than McLame. W was talking about humble foreign policy, McCain was talking as if he was about to start war with Russia...
McLame is still at it...
I just hope that Romney has some wise advisors (Not McLame). The whole foreign policy is a mine field. Obama team is just waiting for Romney to step on a mine...
Foreign Policy for Romey should be only Obama failures: Egypt, Libya (rest of North Africa) plus failure of the whole Iran policy. He does not need to solve anything in a speech or a debate. Just point to Obama failures, walk away.
