Sam Donaldson had some harsh words this weekend for President Obama's performance at Wednesday's debate.
Appearing on the syndicated Chris Matthews Show, the former ABC White House correspondent said, "If he comes to the next two debates with the same demeanor, with the same passive resistance, hes losing" (video follows with transcript and commentary):
Sam Donaldson: 'If Obama Comes to the Next Two Debates With the Same Demeanor He's Losing'
CHRIS MATTHEWS, HOST: Sam, huge impact of that debate Wednesday night?SAM DONALDSON: Big. Think John Kennedy in 1960, think Ronald Reagan in 1980. It's possibly that big because the president seemed to be on a glide path toward re-election, and all of a sudden here comes the raging bull, Mitt Romney, out of the dock, and the toreador runs for the safety exits instead of counterpunching, instead of getting him hard. What happened to Barack Obama? I'm not certain. I don't know. But I know this: if he comes to the next two debates with the same demeanor, with the same passive resistance, hes losing.
MATTHEWS: Wow!
Wow indeed.
He’s losing no matter what, Sam.
Sam’s still alive?
He may be alive but not the hair.
Exactly!
Barely.
No problem. He can just lose the demeanor.
What demeanor should he replace it with? Or maybe he can beat Romney with no demeanor.
“I’m demeanor, Romney’s demeanist.”
“raging bull, Mitt Romney”
Really Sam, really??
I have had a theory about Obama for a couple of months now. Wait... gotta straighten out that tinfoil hat.
Anyway, my theory seemed even more plausible (to me) after the first debate.
I think that it is possible that OB does not want to win. I’m not going to explain it right now, but let’s just watch and see if maybe I’m right.
Really Sam? Wow, you’re really willing to lay it out there aren’t you...
Bambi’s demeanor may change but it won’t change the result of the debate.
Obama asking for another 4 years is like me, a businessman, trying to renew a 4 year contract with a customer who has been badly burned by an agreement with my company. He never recouped any of his investment and in fact lost a ton of $$ trying to successfully execute the contract. So I say..... “Ah, well, uh, you’ve lost, uh, a lot of $$ during the initial term of the,uh contract, but, but, I swear if you renew for another, uh, four years say, you’ll make all that back and more! Why? Because I, uh, said so.”
Yeah right. Debate over.
I have had the same gut feeling, but unlike you, don't have a reason for it.
The posture of these two is interesting to me. He (Michelle) appears to be seething, and she (Barry) appears to be in auto-babble mode.
I recall when watching the debate that I could hardly follow Barry's line of thought, he was not cohesive at all.
Raging Bull - Romney
Rowdy Rowdy Piper - Bob Dole
The Undertaker - Gerald Ford
WHAT PLANET ARE THEY LIVING ON......??
Isn’t the second ‘99 debate between GW and AlGore the one where AlGore tried being more “forceful” by walking right up to Bush at the beginning handshake and getting in his face? I remember how phony it looked. I also remember GW’s somewhat amused reaction to it.
Maybe Obama will try some similar phony tactic.
Mitt....the Vanilla Thrilla!
