(Reuters) - Venezuela's presidential election looked headed for a close finish on Sunday with President Hugo Chavez facing an unprecedented challenge to his socialist rule from a young rival tapping into discontent over crime and cronyism.
An energetic campaign by centrist state governor Henrique Capriles, 40, has given the opposition its best chance in 14 years to unseat the popular president and take the reins of South America's leading oil exporter.
Chavez has used record oil revenue to support ideological allies around the world while taking a fiercely anti-American stance in global diplomacy, so the election is being watched eagerly from the United States and Cuba to Belarus and Iran.
With polling stations closing around 6 p.m. local time (2230 GMT), sources on both sides were predicting a narrow victory based on their monitoring of the vote, while local analysts said the ballot was looking too close to call.

Global communism might have peaked. Bad news for Barry and Sean Penn. Penn will probably have to be placed on suicide watch if his boy can’t pull it out.
Chavez won’t leave. Not to mention he runs the country. This won’t end well
Not buying it, it’s only a matter of Chavez telling them what the margin of victory will be.
The consultant Variance granted a victory for opposition leader 51.3% versus 48.06 Chavez.
Translated from article.
I remember her distinctly telling me during the US campaign four years ago about how Obama was saying the exact same things Chavez said when he was first elected.
Anyone who thinks Chaves will relinquish rule is a little crazier than I thought.
It's naive to the point of silliness to think Chavez will simply hand over the reins of power. Sure, he has to submit to the charade of open elections for the purpose of international public opinion, but let's not get crazy.
Although I could be wrong if it's the case the Acolytes of the Antichrist don't need bowels!
Maybe Obama will invite him to share his Hawaii home when he is defeated in November.
In a recent electoral campaign in Santo Domingo, the leftmost candidate used the Obama slogan (Si se puede). Of course, from my perspective all the candidates there, even the "right-wing" guy, were socialists.
We have Venezuelan friends who've said the exact same thing.
Pray for America.
Chavez is a dictator. He will not be stepping down.
So what will Barry have to say? Could be a preview for November.
Re exit polls:
Remember what Stalin said, “What matters is who counts the votes.”
Im reading on twitter according to exit polls Chavez is down 3 right now..I doubt Chavez loses but if he does this will be a great day!! I can just imagine Obama and Penn crapping logs right now because if Chavez goes down, its a good sign that Obama will go down too
I can’t see Chavez going quietly into the night. The other guy should be very careful.
Popular? Feared is more like it.
Venezuelan voting goes into overtime ‘due to lines’..
If it holds, and the Venezuelans throw out their Marxist, there is no reason Americans cannot throw out their Marxist.
It’s not who votes; it’s who counts the votes.
