People have been expecting a realignment to happen with the GOP...but I think it’s much more likely that the Dems will either implode and cease to exist at all, or will divide into two factions.

If there was indisputable proof that the “birthers” were right all along that could be the trip wire. In fact if it came out early in the Romney administration it still could happen. If it happened 10 or 20 years from now it will be a historical footnote, like Chester Allen Arthur's NBC problem.

Unfortunately the issue of the states actually checking for eligibility still remains. Remember, put Zero aside for a moment, a naturalized citizen (I assume he was a legal citizen!) originally from Guatemala (or one of the Central American nations!) got on the ballot in 18 states back in the 1980s or 1990s. The SOS’s of those states were either too stupid or just criminally lazy to do their jobs and protect their respective state's ballots. It's not relevant he was a minor party candidate and had no chance of winning. He was unconstitutionally on those ballots! Those SOS’s betrayed their oaths of office to their state and their nation.
