...."Wow," was the response to the 85 mph speed limit by Dave Goldberg, a spokesman for Transportation for America, which promotes alternative transit systems.
Goldberg questioned the motivation, contending the road's builder is worried mostly about attracting motorists who are willing to pay tolls to drive fast rather than safely.
"The need to recoup investment trumps almost every other consideration," Goldberg said.....

Considering the percentage of Florida drivers who are ALREADY going 85 mph on the highways, why is this even needed? The truckers in TX would definitely benefit more than the folks in FL.
Hahahahahah...liberal, pear-shaped, pony-tailed dweeb is puzzled and outraged!
"This is an outrage! They don't want to drive safely! They don't want to do it for the children! For Gaia!"
Considerations such a "Global Warming" and "Big Oil"...
OMG! This is too rich. Where did they find this guy?
Stopped reading after that. What does he want, 10 mph speed limits?
Too much consuming and freedom going on.
Can't have that.
The existing road I 35 is a parking lot. This new toll road would be a success with a 30MPH speed limit.
Excuse me Mr. Goldberg, where were you raised? Oh. And I’m sure it was a nice brownstone that your folks owned too. Oh. So you walked to school when you were little, is that correct? Tell me sir, have you ever owned a drivers license?
I wish highway cops would target unsafe drivers, not speeders.
I speed, but I consider myself a safe driver.
I wish tail-gaters and unsafe lane-changers would get their cars impounded and kept in storage for a couple of months. It would be nice to get them off the road.
Left to my own devices and with one of today’s best highways all to myself, the limit would still be around 75 - 80. Above 80 is simply dangerous, too many ways some deer or something is going to try to cross the road and there’d be no way to deal with that at 85.
Why, oh, why, does the media ALWAYS go to some statist fool to comment on actions that most people consider normal and a sign of progress (the real kind, not the statist kind)?!?!?
A story about a new local microbrewery? They go ask MADD what they think about drinking (as if we care).
A story about a new nightclub? They go ask some community organizer (yes one of them) about late-night noise (that is, the kind not made by gang bangers, car stereos, and guns).
A story about a new retail establishment? They run out to get some mom-and-pop to grumble about it.
On and on it goes. The media will tell you this provides ‘balance’ but really all it does is bow the lever the wrong way.
I would add people who drive UNDER the speed limit on two lane roads to those who should have their cars impounded...
If simply driving at speeds in excess of 80 mph on interstates dramatically increased accidents, then the state of Wisconsin would be seeing a ten-fold increase in yearly traffic fatalities. Because whenever I get on I-90 while driving 70 (5 over the limit), I’m constantly passed by drivers traveling in the 75-85 range. Especially in the I-90-94 corridor.
I've driven the Austin Toll road (45 /130) on a number of occasions ... and love the 85 MPH speed limit.
The "roads" shown in the "news" report are blacktop/under construction - and let's be sure to throw in a video of an injured LEO to reinforce our slanted point of view.
130, on the other hand, is 2 lanes of pristine concrete with wide shoulders and no obstructions.
And if someone is stupid enough to drive beyond their or their vehicle's capability, give them a Darwin award.
We live in the Dallas area and routinely take a side highway south to San Antonio because it is faster than the Interstate. Parking lot.
The Slantinal is a farrrrrr left wing rag and not to be trusted to give you the morning weather report
