I don't have that reference anymore and it was from 2011 - however I did read it in a credible place and I believe Switzerland was rated highest.

I had thought they attributed much of the stability to a (more) regulated banking industry.

At any rate I love Canadians and frequently post the anthem on my facebook page as a tribute.

Have you read this?

I believe you re the reference. “Economic stability” is a highly subjective subject and I was kind of surprised Canada ranked so high. Norway and Sweden would seem to be good candidates, although their economies are much smaller. I tend to think that energy security (access to domestic energy or at least an uninterruptible foreign supply) is a basic prerequisite to economic stability. Canada rates very highly on that score.

Domestic agricultural resources also rate high with me. Canada has a strong agricultural sector. In other words we can feed ourselves and, keep ourselves warm and mobile, and run our factories farms and schools from domestic sources.

Another thing I love about FR. I live in Canada and NEVER read Ottawa Citizen editorials. You don't and are pointing one out to me regarding Canada's Iranian policy. Thanks.

Further to closing the embassy in Teheran. I know that diplomats as possible hostages was always a primary concern. The government really did not make that much of that aspect. After 1979, I have no doubt that the regime over there would have no qualms about taking Canadian diplomats hostage. If they can't get at Americans, they'll take the next best thing.
