Employers also mention a lack of elementary command of the English language. A survey in April of human-resources professionals conducted by the Society for Human Resource Management and the AARP compared the skills gap between older workers who were nearing retirement and younger workers coming into the labor pool. More than half of the organizations surveyed reported that simple grammar and spelling were the top "basic" skills among older workers that are not readily present among younger workers.

Last line is idiotic:

The crunch is coming unless we turn around societal attitudes toward working with our hands and once again, find honor in the work itself, and not necessarily how much the worker is paid.

How much a worker is paid is EXACTLY the value of the job. Money is a medium of exchange for easily measuring the value of goods, services, labor, etc. The employer should pay the employee in accordance with the value he gets from that employee's work. Neither the employer nor the employee is engaging in the activity out of the goodness of their hearts. If the job is worth less to you as an employer, then pay less, but don't then go griping about a lack of enthusiasm or good applicants.

Government schools are a failure as all that government gets involved a lot fails.

The U.S. is becoming a 3rd world country. Obama , democrats and the media are to blame. They are all democrats and have caused the destruction of the greatest country ever. America with freedom and capitalism built technology and living standards and a country above all others. Then when we reached this peak democrats destroyed it all with growing government. Anyone think the U.S. won't collapse with this growing Obama debt of 16 trillion?

My mom and I have both been in positions that required training new hires. We both have come to the agreement that we’d prefer to hire someone with “people-skills” who needed technical training, rather than someone with lots of technical skills but who isn’t as good with people.

People with both people-skills and a solid work ethic are amazingly hard to find.

The best way to predict future performance is to look at past performance. I’m amazed that people make selection decisions based on one interview. Look at our President. What was his past performance like? He talked a good fight and was elected. Now, we have an economy in the dumper, unemployment that is astronomical and a foreign policy that is the joke of the world. No sir, no more rhetoric rangers that talk a good fight. Romney has shown that he understands business. Obama has shown that he understands.....how to tee up a golf ball.

I would suspect one of the missing “soft skills” is the ability to show up on time for work on a regular basis.

- I do not shed a single tear for "employers". American businesses have shown ample enthusiasm for mass worker firings, outsourcing and and taking advantage of the economic downturn by cutting wages. If you can't find workers who are willing to bust their asses for lower pay with all the future expectation of watching their entire industry sent to China, tough crap! Go make more millions investing in Bernake's funny money.

- I am also not buying any of the crap talk from the over 50s who see all the youngsters as a bunch of un/miseducated immoral hooligans. Quite frankly, America went to hell in a handbasket, ON YOUR WATCH. Maybe you didn't vote for the socializing of America, but you didn't stop it either. It's certainly not the fault of some 20 year old.

.....simple grammar and spelling were the top “basic” skills ....

The article mentioned telephone skills but in my experience in dealing with young women, they don’t answer the phone any more. E mail is the communications method and the ability to write sentences is mandatory. Those who can’t write are shunned by those who must communicate with them.
