I think it is a smart move, motivated, as you say, by Realpolitik. The Presidential race seems all but lost, unless R&R can turn it around in the last 4 weeks, which seems increasingly unlikely. Hence, we need to do all we can to keep the House and win the Senate to blunt the edge of 0’s 2nd term.

I live in the KCMO ad market. The ads running against Akin are brutal.

The email I got on Oct. 1 did not list Akin as the ninth candidate being supported.

I do agree with you that Akin will win. I also believe he ought to have dropped out, given the way that played out in the first week.

I would not have thought this way if there were not two other very good alternatives to Akin in MO.

Akin bucked the establishment and more than once. You should read the night the clocks froze regarding the type of man Akin is! he voted against more than one of Bush’s big spending programs which brought the wrath of Blunt, Hastert and even Bush down on him.

Akin has a spine of steel. He did not cave despite enormous pressure from Hastert, Delay, Blunt and Bush. Regarding medicare D. http://www.firedupmissouri.com/content/flashback-night-clocks-scoreboard-stood-still

Reps. Todd Akin and Jo Ann Emerson were key targets of Hastert, Delay and Blunt. Akin received personal pleas from President Bush, but refused to support the bill; Akin called it a "a vote of conscience."

Bush was on the phone aboard Air Force One on the way back, still scrambling for votes. But he wasn’t having much success. He failed to persuade at least five GOP members who had voted for an earlier version of the bill to back the measure headed to the floor.

One of them was Rep. Todd Akin (R-Mo.), a staunch conservative who was elected along with the president in 2000. Akin explained his concerns to Bush about the bill’s cost, adding: “I’m sorry, Mr. President. It’s a vote of conscience.”

A testy Bush shot back: “Are you saying I don’t have a conscience?”

Bush and Akin would talk again 12 hours later...

Hastert, DeLay and Thomas looked grim some 90 minutes into the vote. They were used to winning, and the possibility of an embarrassing loss was setting in. Democrats, meanwhile, tried to hide their glee, not wanting to provide fodder for a changed vote.

As lawmakers and aides continued to lobby Smith, Hastert sought out Akin.

Akin recounted that the Speaker, “with almost tears in his eyes, said, ‘Todd, I need your vote.’”

“Denny is like a brother to me,” Akin said, “but I had to tell him no.”...

A cell phone was soon passed around with the president on the other end. Bush talked to several members, including Chabot and Akin. Both stood their ground.

“The email I got on Oct. 1 did not list Akin as the ninth candidate being supported.”

Your post # 21 (”Jim DeMint just sent an email ad asking for money for eight Senate candidates. Akin is not among those eight. It’s one of those emails that does not take replies.”) gave the impression that perhaps DeMint was not backing Akin.

As I mentioned, I get regular e-mails from DeMint’s Senate Conservatives Fund. I did not get the one today you referred to that listed the 8 other candidates that the SCF is backing but apparently, as you state, omits Akin. I don’t know why they would have left me off today’s e-mail. But here is the e-mail I received last Thursday (Sept. 27) from the SCF:

“Fellow Conservatives:

“We have the results of our survey regarding the U.S. Senate race in Missouri. I want to thank everyone who took time to share their views. The results were truly remarkable.

“Over 8,000 votes were cast and 93% of you said the Senate Conservatives Fund (SCF) should endorse Todd Akin (R-MO) given that he’s the Republican candidate, the race is competitive, and the outcome could determine control of the Senate.

“On the question of how much you would be willing to contribute if SCF backed him, over $290,000 was pledged for Todd Akin’s campaign — a significant amount that could provide a major boost to his campaign.

“We’ve heard you loud and clear so we’re going to endorse him today and provide a way for you to immediately swing into action.

“If you made a pledge to financially support Todd Akin’s campaign to defeat liberal Senator Claire McCaskill (D-MO), now is the time to fulfill that pledge.

“Click here to make a secure, online contribution today. As you know, his campaign will receive 100% of your donation.

The stakes in this race could not be higher.
• Senator Claire McCaskill cast the deciding vote to pass Obamacare.

• She voted for President Obama’s failed stimulus program.

• She voted for the Wall Street bailout, in favor of forced unionism, and to raise the debt limit even higher.

• Claire McCaskill voted with Obama 98% of the time.
If McCaskill is re-elected, she will continue to support the massive spending, bailouts, and debt that are destroying our country.

“Now she’s running a new television ad attacking Todd Akin for supporting limited government.

“Conservative leaders like Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum, and Jim DeMint are lining up behind Todd Akin, but the Republican establishment in Washington still refuses to lift a finger.

“That’s why the grassroots must rise up and fight back.

“Please make a contribution to Todd Akin’s campaign today. It doesn’t matter how much you contribute, just that you give something.

“We’ve set an initial goal of raising $100,000 for his campaign before the FEC reporting deadline this Sunday. Time is short so please take action right now.

“Thank you for your support and thank you for having the courage to fight for conservative principles.

Best regards,

Matt Hoskins
Executive Director
Senate Conservatives Fund”

A check of the SCF website a couple of minutes before the posting of this comment shows the SCF is still supporting Akin and has raised $139,025 for him so far.

Clearly, the SCF and DeMint are not backing away from their support for Akin. From Thursday to today the fund has raised $139,000 for him, which is not bad.

I’m not sure what you were trying to prove with your post.

Talent and Bond are senior advisers to Romney. you better believe there is a green light to support Akin. There will be monetary help with his campaign although it may not have a neon advertisement with it.
Campaigning throughout the state is going to make a difference and Akin is doing just that...there will also be another debate. The conservative voters will show up at the polls on election day and we know the difference in Claire and Akin.

Well, for starters did you see the first debate, where he acted like being a pro-lifer was the most hideously shameful thing that someone could be. McCain started out as a pro-lifer, and he acted the same way. Akin is on the McCain track.

You must be high on something evil because you know not of what you speak. Akin is a fine man and a good conservative. Why don’t you go back to your sniffing and leave this blog to the grown ups.

And how's his pro-life voting record? As I recall, he's ranked pretty high by the pro-life groups.

A fine man and a good conservative, just like Romney, and, McCain, and Charlie Crist, and Lincoln Chaffee, and Arlen Specter, and Jim Jeffords, etc. So conservative he took money from Democrats and Karl Rove.

Did you check post #46? and as for the debates..Akin excelled. Best comment of the debate, "the only thing scarier than your insurance company coming between you and your doctor is the federal govt. standing between you and your doctor" Todd Akin

AND some pro lifers especially ones that supported partial birth abortions or like Obama (as senator) supported letting a baby that survived a botched abortion be killed or just left to die. Yes, it is shameful! do not use our tax dollars to provide abortions and do not force catholic hospitals, doctors, etc to play a role that is adverse to their beliefs....GO AKIN!

By the way, I have a friend who is the product of a rape. You know the kind of person who Akin doesn’t believe to deserve to live.

So Akin gets you to bash conservatives? Does that really make him a good candidate?
