Gangbangers in Chicago: What makes them tick, what are they thinking?
CBS 2s Walter Jacobson sat down with gang members in Chicagos troubled Englewood neighborhood to try to find some answers.
Some of the responses he received were not encouraging.
Theres no solution to the violence, one gang member tells him. Killing, killing is the solution.
Jacobson asked the young man if he would kill personally, if he had to.
Ive never killed before, but if I had a gun in my possession, he said.
Jacobson says he has been walking the blocks for many years, but the state of despair never changes poverty, sticks and stains.
The gang members do not like the state of affairs any more than anyone else.
Weve got to eat. We want to. We want money. We want to get fresh, we want fresh eggs almost every day. We want all that, another young man said.
But where do they get the money they need? The young man answered bluntly.
Rob, steal and kill. Thats the only way. We didnt grow up in Beverly Hills. We dont get it handed to us, he said.
We aint living in Hyde Park, added a third young man. The home of the University of Chicago is only a couple of miles away from Englewood geographically, at least.
But given the state of their impoverished Englewood neighborhood, where is the money they can get?
Selling drugs, a young man replied. In our neighborhood, I aint going to lie to you. Thats where the money comes from.
Some of the young men were brought into gangs as children. Isnt that pretty young to play gang warfare?
A young man answered: I chose the gang. I didnt have to choose anything. I was only 10. My OG (old gangster) gave me everything. But I just went on my own and I chose to get in the gang. We was whipping everybody in the neighborhood. Respect. I was getting money.
The gang members also said they are at war with the Chicago Police Department.
The police hate us, a young man said. Every time they ride past us, they shoot us down and do all that. Do what you want to do, I dont care about you all, keep riding. Who are you all? Were not scare of you all. Ill fight you too. Take that badge off.
But he says the police cannot catch them or exact any consequences.
I laugh at the police, he said. Theyre a joke to me.
And where would the young men like to be in 10 years?
One of them replied, in a mansion, with a lot of cars, and a lot of women.
Another said, I just hope Im still living.
Because if you somehow got those who commit the crimes to stop committing crimes, the man behind the curtain would create more people to commit crimes.
—— . Their failure to learn lessons never ceases to amaze me ——
The sentimental liberals who are governed by emotion are incapable of learning. They’re almost as dangerous as the Marxist ideologies bent on collapsing the system.
The ONLY immediate and politically feasible way to break the cycle is to voucherize the schools. Private schools CAN provide decent education to welfare kids, and point these children to the emergency exits.
Chode: "kill-em all... works for me "
So I guess the solution you two would advocate would be to kill every man, woman, and child in those neighborhoods?
How would you suggest that this pogrom be performed? Cordon off the neighborhood and start a sweep from one end to the other?
I'd just kill the first born in every household.
These geniuses don’t realize that they are the ones who will be killed.
These people seem to see a world divided in two:
Some folks are born in Beverly Hills. Everything is handed to them. They live in mansions with lots of women.
Others are just born black.
Perhaps, through robbing and killing, some blacks may also live in mansions with lots of women. Hope and Change, man. Hope and Change.
And then they will be the targets of the “Poor, hungry, young turks” who want what you have and right now without having to put in the time working for it.
Rob, steal and kill. Thats the only way. We didnt grow up in Beverly Hills. We dont get it handed to us, he said.”
...exactly what “The Great Society” had in mind. More importantly, this is what excites Obobo. What a mentailty.
Come on ClearCaseguy - you know all of us were born in Beverly Hills - you know it was all 'handed to us'. This kids got it right.
Our secret is out.
None of us ever - NOT EVER - had to work, or pick up the garbage in our own yards, or go to school, or sweat the first job. Nope, none of that crap for us. You and me ClearCase - it was all handed to us. On a platter - a big silver one. Remember? The one the butler used to put our allowances on ... all that cash... Ah, sweet memories. Our secret is out...
There are members of this board who claim with a straight face that once the EBT cards no longer buy anything of value that these guys will give up their evil ways and become productive citizens.
Possibly so, but most of the members here think the opposite. They think that the vermin will attempt to swarm out of their cesspools looking for food, women, bling and anything else they can get their hands on.
Actually the most efficient way would probably be a siege. Just cordon off the neighborhood so nothing gets in or out. Then wait about 60 days and let nature take its course.
Read the comments at the CBS site.
It’s like a mirror-image of Freeper comments. I think even Chicago is fed up with the progressive spin!
BTW, you know who DOES live in Hyde Park? The guy that’s supposed to so “in touch” with minorities - Barack Obama - yet refuses to pay so much as 1 single visit to downtown Chicago.
Feel exploited yet, Black America??
Oh, OK. But what about the future gangbangers that will be born of these women who get paid more depending upon how many bastards they can squeeze out?
That's what I'm getting at with the "man behind the curtain."
This will always exist when people think that everybody is "given" what they have and that some are just "given" more than others. Some will just whine and be resentful and some will decide that "killing is the only solution."
This attitude is so commonplace in poor neighborhoods, I think that the attitude will just continue to breed more gangbangers. You can kill every single last gangbanger and there will be more bred to replace them.
Progressives / Socialists like Jacobson will theorize that if you take more from the rich and give it to the poor in order to make everybody the same class, all will be good. That's his point in doing the piece for CBS. He couldn't be more wrong.
As a great Christian saint from the 5th Century AD mused:
Should we look to kings and princes to put right the inequalities between rich and poor? Should we require soldiers to come and seize the rich person's gold and distribute it among his destitute neighbors? Should we beg the emperor to impose a tax on the rich so great that it reduces them to the level of the poor and then to share the proceeds of that tax among everyone? Equality imposed by force would achieve nothing, and do much harm. Those who combined both cruel hearts and sharp minds would soon find ways of making themselves rich again. Worse still, the rich whose gold was taken away would feel bitter and resentful; while the poor who received the gold form the hands of soldiers would feel no gratitude, because no generosity would have prompted the gift. Far from bringing moral benefit to society, it would actually do moral harm…
For what it's worth.
I'd say you'd do better to solve the first before deigning to give predictions on the second.
They are no longer gang-bangers, but a terrorist organization, and should be treated as such. KOBK!
My, aren't you the petulant little social engineer?
Maybe a little reverse engineering.
The Tokyo fire storm, Hiroshima, Nagasaki, etc did decisively remove interest in war from the Japanese psyche.
Why are you adding me to your “kill’em all” canards?
