During his life, Sergei wrote a lot of art songs, or lieder, as they are known in German, much like Schubert, Schumann, Brahms and Wolf. These are settings of poetry, where Sergei was responsible for the melody. In 1893, Sergei published a group of six songs as his Opus 4.
I actually managed to find some videos with translations! These videos offer both Russian and English lyrics when you expand the area beneath the video. This is a voyage of discovery for me, and Im starting to appreciate Sergeis gift for writing for voice.
These are videos of Dmitri Hvorostovsky in his early years, before his voice matured. The Russians are turning out some great singers!
