NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- In a rare public apology, Apple CEO Tim Cook on Friday wrote an open letter to customers that acknowledged widespread complaints about the company's new Maps application.
"At Apple, we strive to make world-class products that deliver the best experience possible to our customers," Cook wrote. "With the launch of our new Maps last week, we fell short on this commitment. We are extremely sorry for the frustration this has caused our customers and we are doing everything we can to make Maps better." (Click here to view the full letter).
After using Google's (GOOG, Fortune 500) mapping data for five years, Apple (AAPL, Fortune 500) went in a new direction with the iOS 6 update to its mobile operating system, which rolled out to millions of iPhones, iPads and iPod Touch devices on Sept. 19. The new Apple Maps is also built into all iPhone 5s, which went on sale a week ago.

Has anyone ever heard of “Maps” or a “ Thomas Guide”?? It is pretty sad that the vast majority of Americans are dependent on an electronic device to find the corner ATM or Starbucks. Back when I was a kid, we actually taught people how to do these things, like Reading and Navigating, But then again you could not get a High School Diploma without Passing Drivers ED and Drivers Training and getting a License. All you poor saps dependent on your GPS for guidance will be the ones wandering aimlessly into the night when the power goes out. Not to mention Most GPS’s will not find the way to a whole lot of places and you will end up lost anyway.
I just upgraded my Iphone 3s (it was free) to IOS6 and the maps function looks the same?
It was listed as a “feature upgrade” in the release notes. Just saying.
Actually, google was broken in iOS. In that Apple’s license with google was restrictive in what they could offer, such as voice turn by turn directions, whereas android users got it built in. Also, Apple had roughly a year left on their license (when the new map app was first announced) before it had to be renewed, and renewal was not going to free up any of google’s restrictions, so Apple cut the cord.
As for errors, that’s back end data. A refresh of the OS shouldn’t be required to correct maps.
My Ipad has a metal spiral running across the top of it and I enter data with a graphite center stylus.
I still use folding paper maps and never get lost. Just give me an address and I can find it and probably arrive at the business or home sooner than people who use GPS.
I had a friend who visited...We drove around in his GPS equipped automobile. I told I knew how to get to various places but he insisted on using his GPS. Towards the end he got frustrated with GPS and told me to direct him
Thanks for confirming my concern. I won’t update my iPads until I can install Google Maps, hopefully within a month.

Nothing stops you from launching Safari, going to maps.google.com, and making a alias icon on your desktop.
The “Maps” thing is so over-blown. A large number of users live in major metro areas and see no problems at all. It works just fine for me, as do turn-by-turn directions.
Not to say there aren’t problems, especially for people outside the US (where most of the severe problems seem to be surfacing), but they’ll be fixed.
Odds are, if you live in a major metro area in the US, you won’t have any real problem with the new Maps.
I have to go somewhere within ~100 miles..... All I need is print out one or two google maps. I also have ye old folding maps. But for someone driving around a lot to new places every day like delivery or sales...Then GPS unit makes sense with some backup folding paper maps.
I do that too, but it ticks my wife off that I can drive to an address without using GPS. I know someone who ended up in a "not so nice hood" because he followed his GPS. I can look at a map and have good idea where I need to go and get there without some sexy voice telling me where to turn.

They made the decision easy for you. You can’t download google maps on your iPhone. Google earth, yes, but I would not recommend it for getting around. Map Quest is free, and works OK enough, but I would much rather have google maps.
Most people still learn to walk and light a fire, so I hardly see how your comment makes any sense at all. On the other hand the vast majority of people cannot read, let alone read a map. I would also point out that when I took all of the various written tests with regards to my Pilot license and instrument rating, Everything was done the old fashioned way BY HAND with a pencil and paper and a slide rule. So back to my point, we are CRIPPLING everyone by making things too easy without ever teaching the basics and fundamentals.
